Assist with research, particularly database management, data analysis, and field data collection for a project funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conduct multistate monitoring and research on tidal marsh birds and their habitat from Maine to Virginia. This temporary position pays $21.00/hr.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: The person in this position will assist with research, particularly field data collection on tidal marsh birds in Maine, including mist-netting, banding, morphometric measurements, and vegetation surveying. The person in this position will also manage the associated data and communicate the results of their work with collaborators.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Lead field data collection on tidal marsh wildlife, including bird banding and vegetation sampling
• Maintain accurate records of research findings and the analysis of results.
• Prepare reports in collaboration with team members.
• Present research findings to team members and stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.
• Build productive relationships with internal and external constituencies.
• Utilize coaching and mentoring methods which provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance.
• Commit to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities to improve, and recommending possible alternatives for a situation
• Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility: The incumbent will be responsible for supervising student technicians during field work, subject to review.
Work Environment: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work may be performed in an office or field site. Workload priorities may need to be shifted and schedules changed in order to meet multiple deadlines.
Work Year: Full-time for 4 months.
Work Schedule: Work beyond regular hours to include evenings and weekends may be occasionally necessary for field work.

Knowledge & Skill Qualifications:
Required:
- Typically has the education associated with a bachelor’s degree in ecology or a related discipline and a minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Technical skills in data management, particularly Microsoft Excel, including using code to proof and manage data
- Ability to work independently on wildlife data collection, particularly bird banding, mist netting, and vegetation surveying
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
- Ability to travel, normally requiring a valid driver’s license.
Preferred:
- Experience with relevant data sets, databases, and field data collection methods
- Experience with relevant ecosystems in the northeast region
- Permit or subpermit for wild bird banding from U.S. Geological Survey or ability to qualify
