Requirements
  • At least 3 years of related work experience as an optician or optical consultant dispensing contact lenses and glasses.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Ability to use a lensometer.
  • Ability to provide customer service and perform sales activities.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers, staff, vendors, or other community members.
  • Ability to draw valid conclusions, apply sound judgment, and make decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environment without compromising work quality.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and projects with limited direction.

  • Ability to perform the physical and computer-related functions required by the role, including sitting, standing, walking, handling, reaching, seeing, talking, hearing, lifting materials under 20 pounds, and using a keyboard, calculator, and standard office equipment.
  • Strict compliance with applicable state, federal, OSHA, workers' compensation, HIPAA, ADA, FEHA, Department of Labor, and company policies and practices.
  • The employee must not engage in activities constituting the practice of ophthalmology or interfere with the clinician-patient relationship.
Responsibilities
  • Design, measure, fit, and adapt lenses and frames according to written optical prescriptions or specifications.
  • Assist patients with selecting frames and coordinate frames with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions.
  • Measure clients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers using measuring devices.
  • Prepare work orders and instructions for grinding and mounting lenses and fabricating eyeglasses.
  • Verify that finished lenses are ground to specifications and verify the exactness of finished spectacles.
  • Use a lensometer or lens analyzer to validate prescriptions and determine clients' current lens prescriptions when necessary.
  • Train individuals in proper contact lens insertion and removal practices.
  • Describe vision benefits and navigate multiple benefit options for patients.
  • Maintain records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and payments.
  • Perform administrative duties including inventory and sales tracking, submitting patient insurance information, and simple bookkeeping.
  • Recommend lenses, lens coatings, and frames suited to client needs.
  • Sell contact lenses, spectacles, sunglasses, and other eye-related goods.
  • Heat, shape, or bend plastic and metal frames to adjust eyeglasses for clients.
  • Instruct clients on wearing and caring for eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Repair damaged frames.
  • Obtain previous customer records or verify prescriptions with the examining optometrist or ophthalmologist.
  • Arrange and maintain displays of optical merchandise.
  • Follow backup protocols for processing patients during system outages.
  • Work up patients for the optometrist as needed.
  • Maintain professional appearance and demeanor in accordance with company policies.
  • Keep commitments and inform the direct supervisor about work progress, timetables, and issues.
  • Obtain and review patients' medical histories or records.
  • Perform other duties assigned by management.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
  • Certified Dispensing Optician certification.
