Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent/relevant experience is required.
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required.
- Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
- Proficiency in office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, eye anatomy and physiology, eye disease and systemic diseases that affect the eye, and ophthalmic equipment, including its proper care and usage.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Responsibilities
- Perform ophthalmic testing, measurements, and specialty-specific procedures in accordance with training, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Prepare patients for diagnostic studies, treatments, and procedures, explain processes, and address patient questions.
- Obtain and document patient histories, clinical findings, test results, and procedural data in the electronic medical record.
- Operate ophthalmic instruments, imaging systems, and specialty equipment relevant to assigned clinical services.
- Assist physicians and care teams with examinations and procedures, including pre- and post-procedure patient support.
- Identify and communicate abnormal findings or technical issues following established escalation protocols.
- Ensure exam rooms, procedure areas, and equipment are prepared, maintained, and compliant with safety and infection control standards.
- Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
- Perform refractive evaluations, including documenting medical history; testing visual acuity, depth perception, and color perception; conducting manifest and cycloplegic retinoscopy refraction; performing tonometry and slit-lamp assessments; measuring intraocular pressure and axial length using ultrasound equipment; and performing other physician-requested tests such as PAM and topography.
- Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
- Educate patients about refractive procedures and pre- and post-operative instructions.
- Collaborate on refractive clinical flow with the administrative team and providers.
- Conduct pre- and post-operative vital-sign measurements.
- Perform specialized imaging tests for patients.
- Prepare patients for surgery and assist with elective and medically necessary laser procedures.
- Order and maintain clinical supplies, operating-room supplies, and medications.
- Activate and deactivate lasers on Johnson & Johnson and Alcon platforms.
- Identify proper key cards for different procedures and document their use.
- Troubleshoot laser equipment to identify and solve problems.
- Perform daily fluency tests and calibration assessments to assure surgical parameters and proper laser function.
- Sterilize the laser room, equipment, and instruments.
- Input patient data into the laser system and ensure its accuracy and completeness.
- Monitor the gas supply and change tanks when necessary.
- Document procedures in the logbook.
- Prepare surgical charts and nomograms for providers.
- Complete vendor laser training through Johnson & Johnson and/or Alcon, including didactic coursework and observation of laser operations.
- Complete vendor imaging training supporting Johnson & Johnson and/or Alcon laser systems, including coursework and vendor computer-based learning modules.
- Complete scrub training through the Bascom Palmer fourth-floor nurse clinical education department and maintain annual competencies.
- Complete yearly computer-based laser-safety training certifications.
