Summary of Job Duties:
The Research Technologist reports directly to Teresita Bellido, Professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, and supports the overall operations and research activities of the laboratory. This role collaborates closely with the lab manager, senior technicians, and postdoctoral fellows to ensure efficient, compliant, and high-quality research execution.
The Research Technologist performs specialized technical procedures, including histomorphometric analysis of bone and muscle, and supports or performs surgical protocols. This role also provides training and oversight to technical staff, fellows, and students on laboratory procedures and animal research protocols. In addition, the position manages laboratory supply ordering, contributes to the development of new experimental and surgical protocols, and maintains effective collaboration with the University Animal Laboratory to ensure proper animal care and coordination of related activities.
The Research Technologist ensures efficient workflow, adherence to quality standards, and maintains a working knowledge of applicable regulatory guidelines, including federal regulations and institutional policies governing animal research.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, Health Sciences or a related scientific field PLUS two (2) years of laboratory research experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience working with animal models in a research setting
Basic knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with mouse colony management and database tracking
Experience performing or assisting with surgical procedures in a research environment
Familiarity with histological or histomorphometric analysis techniques
Experience writing or supporting Animal Use Protocols (AUPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Knowledge of regulatory and compliance standards for animal research (e.g., IACUC guidelines)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality and accurate work
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-based research environment

Responsibilities
Oversee daily lab operations and organization
Ensure consistency and compliance with experimental protocols
Monitor and coordinate in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo research activities
Coordinate lab meetings, including scheduling, agendas, and documentation
Support animal research activities in collaboration with the lab manager
Perform surgical and technical procedures under supervision
Maintain quality standards and protocol compliance
