Press play to listen to this content LPA Design Studios has welcomed Lawrence Speck - a respected architect, educator and leader - as a Senior Designer in the firm's Austin office. Speck's deep involvement in Austin's transformation, combined with his current role at UT Austin educating the next generation of designers, brings a unique perspective to LPA. Over the past 25 years, Speck's work has earned more than 120 design awards, including 30+ from the American Institute of Architects. As an educator, he has received more than 40 teaching and service honors, including the AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion, the highest recognition in North America for excellence in architectural education. He has taught at M.I.T., the University of Western Australia and the University of Texas at Austin, where helped found the Center for American Architecture and Design, before serving as Dean for the School of Architecture from 1992 - 2001. Speck is also an AIA Fellow and served as chair of the jury to select fellows in 2005. "LPA is the right culture fit for me - the sincerity, the attitude, the authenticity," said Speck. Tom Muehlenbeck rec center reopens this december. Plano's busiest recreation center is ready for its next chapter. After months of construction and years of planning, the Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center will officially reopen to the public on Thursday, Dec. 4, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6 p.m. at 5801 W. Parker Road. Attendees can tour and use the facility immediately after the ceremony, with full operations resuming at 5 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5. The renovation, funded by the 2021 voter-approved bond package, marks the most significant update to the center since it opened in 2007. The City of Plano partnered with LPA Design Studios for architecture and planning, and Lee Lewis Construction led the construction effort. With more than 400,000 visits each year, Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center serves as a cornerstone of community wellness and recreation. The newly completed renovation focuses on modernizing core infrastructure, improving visitor experience, and expanding amenities for families, swimmers, athletes and fitness enthusiasts. * New children's pool play structure and new pool deck * Refreshed locker rooms * Main sewer line replacement * New HVAC system for improved comfort and energy efficiency * Resurfaced indoor track and gym floor, with updated striping to increase pickleball court availability * New cardio equipment and an improved cardio room environment * Refreshed landscaping and irrigation * Facility-wide updates to meet current building and safety codes The updates aim to extend the life of the 84,000-square-foot facility while keeping pace with evolving recreation trends, a press release stated.
