- Two years of marine mammal systems experience.
- Basic open-water scuba diving certification with at least one year of experience.
- Operational and navigation experience on small boats 40 feet or under, a United States Coast Guard license for operator of uninspected passenger vessels (6-pack, 46 CFR 10.467) or higher, or United States Navy Coxswain certification, plus operational experience using maritime navigational devices.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Ability to pass a swim and dive test and a dive physical.
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
- Written and oral communication skills.
- Commitment to project, team-member, and animal safety through adherence to safety culture, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to obtain a government security clearance before starting work.
- United States citizenship is required to meet the security requirements.
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to pull oneself out of the water onto deck and boat platforms without using a ladder.
- Ability to pass the Maritime Vessel Operation Color Blind Test as directed by the contract.
- Physical qualification to perform dive operations.
- Ability to stoop, bend, squat, climb, kneel, talk, and hear; stand or walk for extended periods; and spend extended periods on a water vessel in different sea states.
- Serve as the primary handler for a specific animal.
- Provide non-supervisory oversight and guidance to Marine Mammal Systems Assistant I and II staff.
- Work with lead staff to discuss animal issues and solutions.
- Monitor and routinely observe animal behavior and wellness and report findings to onsite personnel.
- Complete animal working sessions, including body inspections and assessments of the animal's behavioral and physical wellbeing.
- Engage with animals during working sessions to rehearse and execute multiple behaviors in open water.
- Record information about each session and the animal's performance.
- Perform feedings and administer food supplements.
- Assist with basic animal husbandry.
- Provide diving support to operations, including enclosure inspection and maintenance.
- Support fish house operations by preparing individually formulated rations to meet each animal's specific needs.
- Operate a variety of watercraft.
- Perform tasks related to the care and training of marine mammals for specific marine mammal projects.
- Deter nuisance animals while following established processes and procedures.
- Travel with the animal for extended periods anywhere in the world, potentially including harsh environments and risk locations, with 72 hours' notice.
- A bachelor's degree in Marine Biology or another related field.
- Advanced scuba diving certifications, such as divemaster, instructor, commercial diver certification, or first- or second-class Navy Diver classification.
- Current First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
