AI law startup Norm has raised a $120 million Series C round led by Khosla Ventures, valuing the startup at $1.2 billion.
TIAA CEO Thasunda Brown Duckett says a $4 trillion savings gap, the demise of pensions and a system that shifted risk to workers have left retirement "a real crisis" for millions of Americans. Over 40% of Americans risk running out of money in retirement, she warns. Brown Duckett advocates for "lifetime income" through annuities, where workers contribute to guaranteed income streams they cannot outlive. TIAA returns earnings to participants annually as a "loyalty bonus", differentiating its offering from traditional 401(k) plans. She supports auto-enrolling all workers in retirement plans at a 6% default rate with automatic annual increases. The approach has garnered bipartisan support through legislation like the Secure Act. Brown Duckett's mission stems from discovering her father, a blue-collar worker, never contributed to his employer's 401(k) despite 30 years of eligibility, missing crucial compounding.
Eleven Black CEOs currently lead Fortune 500 companies, representing just 2% of America's largest corporations but marking a record high that has doubled since 2021. These companies collectively generated $432 billion in revenue and hold a combined market value of $405 billion. The roster includes Marvin Ellison of Lowe's, the first Black CEO to lead two different Fortune 500 companies, and Thasunda Brown Duckett of TIAA, one of only two Black women currently serving as Fortune 500 chief executives. Other leaders include Peter Akwaboah (Fannie Mae), Christopher Womack (Southern Company), and Calvin Butler (Exelon). Despite comprising 14% of the overall US workforce, Black employees represent only 7% of managers and 4-5% at senior levels, according to McKinsey research. Throughout Fortune 500 history, only 28 Black CEOs have led these companies.

TIAA CEO Thasunda Brown Duckett has scaled the retirement firm to over $1.5 trillion in assets under management since taking the helm during COVID-19. Last December, TIAA secured a partnership with Vanguard to offer lifetime income annuities to millions of American workers, expanding beyond its traditional nonprofit institutional market into the broader 401(k) space. In a Fortune podcast interview, Brown Duckett shared leadership principles including treating life like a diversified portfolio and pursuing joy over happiness. She discussed leaving JPMorgan Chase for the CEO role, calling it "an opportunity to make a different impact" and "make history at the same time." Brown Duckett emphasises that whilst she values her Fortune 100 role, titles are temporary: "You rent your title and own your character.
