Requirements
  • Undergraduate education in insurance, business, management, or a related field.
  • Ten years of prior insurance experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience investigating and resolving complex coverage issues and litigated claims.
  • Deep knowledge of claims practices used to resolve severe claims.
  • Knowledge of a particular line of business and/or additional education may be required by the business unit.
  • Expertise relating to insurance contracts, coverage issues, contingent or extra-contractual liability against insurers, and litigation management in foreign and domestic contexts.
  • Sophisticated analytical skills to make independent decisions, resolve conflicts in applying coverage to submitted claims, apply jurisdictional law to investigation facts, and apply policy exclusions and exceptions.
  • Ability to coordinate defense counsel handling serious and complex liability and damage cases from inception through trial.
  • Oral and written communication skills for dealing with policyholders, claimants, attorneys, physicians, and all levels of management.
  • Organizational skills to establish work priorities and meet objectives and standards.
  • Personal computer skills and ability to operate claims and business software.
  • Associates must acquire required federal and/or state licenses and registrations within the designated time period.
  • A valid credit check and/or background check is required as part of the selection process.
Responsibilities
  • Handle the most serious and complex E&S claims from inception to conclusion.
  • Settle or dispose of claims of significant value, including individual policy exposures exceeding $10-$50 million and high-limit excess, umbrella, and unique risks.
  • Identify and manage reserves in compliance with company standards and practices.
  • Recommend special reserves when necessary.
  • Provide litigation strategies and consultation in partnership with defense counsel.
  • Monitor litigation trends and practices to ensure lawsuits are handled consistently.
  • Recommend changes to business leadership, provide implementation strategies, and coordinate execution processes.
  • Build and maintain relationships with agents, brokers, and product developers.
  • Help develop business plans to ensure claims-quality results.
  • Act as a top-level expert in product development and management for specialty lines of business.
  • Provide standardized processes and claims-handling expertise for new product development.
  • Act as a top-level subject matter expert in specialty-line claims.
  • Identify and develop training plans and strategies for the division.
  • Provide niche training and consultation to non-claims areas.
  • Provide top-level consultation and direction to E&S Claims leaders, peers, and other business partners on severe specialty-claims issues, coverages, or risks.
  • Maintain current knowledge of multiple coverage lines, venue-specific court decisions, current guidelines, and policy changes and modifications.
  • Manage associate performance, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions of contributing staff when assigned.
  • Travel as necessary.
