A Day in the Life
The Engineering Manager of the Firmware Tools team carries both functional and program management responsibilities providing leadership, guidance, and subject matter expertise to support the planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of new, custom, and updated firmware tools and environments for the Neuromodulation and Pelvic Health Operating Units.
This role works closely with stakeholders to ensure the planning and success of individual contributors are compliant and efficient. This role applies proven communication skills, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of best practices to guide the team to continually improve and efficiently execute.
Functional Management:
- Plans and directs all aspects of the firmware tools design, development, delivery, and services supporting new medical device products and software systems.
- May develop, evaluate, implement, and maintain technical quality assurance and control systems or reliability systems and standards pertaining to the development and maintenance of custom tools and environments utilized in product development testing.
- Guides the conceptualization and development of custom development and testing support tools, virtual environments, and hardware environments including new technologies, processes, and methods.
- Lead, coach, and mentor a team focused on the development of custom tools and environments.
- Develop and understand skills of employees and encourage growth and development within the organization.
- Align on prioritization and resourcing with other organizational priorities.
- Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the firmware tools function.
- Monitor trends in process and execution and make data-driven decisions on improvement and sustainment strategies.
- Be a change agent and facilitate change to improve efficiency, compliance, and reduce cycle times.
Program Management:
- Oversees and collaborates with stakeholders to identify new and changing methodologies to develop and test firmware and software systems.
- Directs the development of new concepts from initial design to market release.
- Manages feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended.
- Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.
- Organizes the coordination of activities with stakeholders, including but not limited to: other functional teams, project/program managers, and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
- Lead or participate in the planning and coordination of larger and medium scale projects.
- Define and maintain metrics reporting – supporting on-time, on-budget assumptions and predictability in future planning.
- Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, materials, machines, processes, or products.
- Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.
- Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
- Accountable for firmware tools development, planning, and implementation, working with extended project team members and core teams.
Must Haves
- Bachelor’s degree in related technical discipline with 5+ years of job-related experience, OR
- Master’s degree in related technical discipline with 3+ years of job-related experience

- Demonstrated experience working in a medical device environment.

- Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly the verbal skills necessary for communicating with multiple individuals and groups of stakeholders, often under deadline pressure.

- Experience working with outside suppliers for services such as for printing and web development.
- Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to changes in technology, processes, or requirements.
- Trained Scrum Master, PMP, and/or Agile Development experience

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$136,000.00 - $204,000.00This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
