Sprouts Farmers Market operates as a specialty grocery retailer focused on natural and organic foods. It runs more than 400 stores in 24 states, offering a curated selection that mirrors a farmers market, including produce, organic options, vitamins and supplements, bulk foods, meat and dairy, and natural body care. Stores are smaller (about 23,000 square feet) to emphasize freshness and efficiency, with a strong distribution network to keep products fresh. A major part of its offering is private-label products (over 2,400 items) that made up about 23% of sales in late 2024, helping margins and loyalty. The company differentiates itself by concentrating on hard-to-find natural and specialty items, health-focused categories (plant-based, gluten-free, keto, paleo), and a farm-market shopping vibe, rather than competing as a traditional grocery store. Its goal is to make natural foods more accessible and affordable while serving as a complementary destination for health-minded shoppers.

NC grocery chain in expansion wave around Charlotte heads to South Boulevard. Updated August 11, 2026 1:43 PM Gift Article A North Carolina grocery chain is expanding again in Charlotte with plans to convert another retailer's space just two months after its most recent store debut. Lowes Foods plans to renovate the existing Burlington store at 4726 South Blvd. in the Woodlawn Marketplace shopping center, according to a city filing submitted Monday. The sketch plans for review include a drive-thru and parking lot improvements. "We have had conversations with the developer for the site but have not finalized plans," Lowes Foods said in a statement Tuesday to The Charlotte Observer. The location is less than 6 miles from another Burlington store that opened in 2021, also on South Boulevard, and less than 9 miles from a Burling store on Pineville-Matthews Road. The South Boulevard store is 48,000-square-feet, according to real estate firm Kimco Realty. Other tenants in the shopping center include Home Depot, TJ Maxx, Micro Center and Arby's. Lowes Foods adding more grocery stores around Charlotte. Lowes Foods has been expanding in the Charlotte region after pulling back over a decade ago. In June, the Winston-Salem-based grocer opened its seventh store in the market at the intersection of Kannapolis Parkway and Rogers Lake Road in Kannapolis. It was the third Lowes Foods store opening in less than a year in the region. In January, a Waxhaw store opened at 3412 Providence Road and last September, the Indian Land, S.C., store at U.S. 521 and Possum Hollow Road at The Exchange debuted. Lowes also opened a store in Columbia. Lowes also is building a second Mooresville store at the southwest corner of Mecklenburg Highway and the East-West Connector. That store is expected open next year. Lowes Foods joins crowded Charlotte grocery market. Thedrive to capture grocery shoppers' dollars is fierce in the $10.8 billion Charlotte market, where discount giant Walmart and Matthews-based Harris Teeter consistently rank at the top, respectively. Other grocers are expanding, too, with openings expected this year: * Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans will make its Charlotte debut Oct. 14 with a 110,000-square-foot grocery in Ballantyne at 11550 North Community House Road. * Sprouts Farmers Market, a Phoenix-based specialty grocer, plans to open at the former Earth Fare at Christenbury Corners, 8885 Christenbury Parkway, in Concord. The store is expected to open this fall. * El Rey Supermarket is planning an interior upfit at the former Walgreens at 7115 E. W.T. Harris Blvd. in Charlotte. The 11,200-square-foot building will house the specialty grocer, which stocks mostly Mexican products along with items from El Salvador, Colombia and the Dominican Republic. The store is expected to open this summer. Lowes Foods' history in Charlotte. In 2014, Lowes Foods began pulling out of Charlotte, swapping stores with Harris Teeter and closing underperforming stores as part of a reinvestment strategy. The 72-year-old company has nearly 9,000 employees at about 80 Lowes Foods supermarkets in the Carolinas. Lowes Foods is a subsidiary of Alex Lee, based in Hickory. Fair Lawn 55+ community with Sprouts secures $66.85M loan. JLL secures construction financing for Plaza Greene in Bergen County A new 55-plus residential community coming to Bergen County, and anchored by a Sprouts Farmers Market, is marking progress following construction financing for Plaza Greene in Fair Lawn. JLL announced the $66.85 million in funding Aug. 5. The firm represented the borrower, a joint venture between Livingston-based Sterling Properties and Danbro Properties of Caldwell. PCCP and U.S. Bank in Bridgewater provided the loan. The mixed-use development at 21-01 Fair Lawn Ave. will rise steps from the Radburn Train Station, offering a transit-oriented living option within downtown Fair Lawn. The mid-rise four-story building will feature 145 luxury market-rate and affordable apartments. As boomers continue to leave their mark on the economy, downsizing homeowners are driving demand for smaller spaces that retain ties to their communities and offer convenience. Plaza Greene will include a total 24,035 square feet of ground-level retail space. The new Sprouts Farmers Market will occupy more than 22,000 square feet. The project also aligns with local goals to establish Fair Lawn as an "Age-Friendly" community. People 65 years or older comprise more than 18% of the borough's population, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Niche.com grades Fair Lawn with an overall A+, inclusive of an A- for nightlife. The ratings site also ranks the Bergen County suburb as one of the best places to live in New Jersey. Plaza Greene plans boutique hotel-style amenities, such as a clubroom, fitness studio, landscaped courtyard and more. The development broke ground in June, with Gov. Mikie Sherrill on hand. March Associates Construction Inc. serves as general contractor/construction manager. The project will redevelop an outdated retail property. It first appeared before the Planning Board in 2025, Tapinto Fair Lawn/Glen Rock reported at the time. Senior Managing Directors Jim Cadranell and Jon Mikula, Vice President Michael Lachs and Analyst Kevin Badger led the JLL Capital Markets Debt Advisory team. According to Cadranell, Plaza Greene fills a "critical void" in the Bergen County rental market. "The combination of Sprouts Farmers Market, luxury apartments, immediate train access and Fair Lawn's strong demographics created a compelling story for lenders seeking well-located mixed-use construction opportunities," he said. The latest Sprouts Farmers Market marks the banner's continued expansion throughout the Garden State. In addition to anchoring the redevelopment of a neighborhood retail center in Toms River, the grocery store also has plans for a new location in Somerset County. Next month, Sprouts' New Jersey footprint will expand to seven stores, with September debuts due in Sewell and East Windsor.
Sprouts Farmers Market sets opening date for new North Park store replacing beloved Pancho Villa market. After nearly two years of anticipation, San Diego's newest Sprouts Farmers Market finally has an opening date. The specialty grocer has announced it will officially debut its long-awaited North Park location on October 2, transforming the former Pancho Villa Farmers Market into one of the company's largest neighborhood stores. The new Sprouts will occupy the approximately 22,700-square-foot building at 3245 El Cajon Boulevard, a site that for more than two decades served as home to Pancho Villa Farmers Market, one of San Diego's most beloved Latino supermarkets. The opening represents the final chapter in a transition that has reshaped one of North Park and Normal Heights' most recognizable grocery properties. Pancho Villa, founded in 2004 by the late Stephen W. Boney, closed permanently in early 2025 following Boney's death at age 81. For years, the market served as the area's only dedicated Latino supermarket, earning a loyal following for its fresh tortillas, expansive carnicería, prepared foods, produce, aguas frescas and hard-to-find Mexican grocery items. Ironically, the property's next tenant also traces its roots back to the Boney family. Stephen Boney came from one of San Diego's best-known grocery dynasties. His father, Henry Boney, founded Henry's Farmers Market, while Stephen's brother Stan Boney later co-founded Sprouts Farmers Market in Arizona in 2002. Stephen chose a different path, creating Pancho Villa to serve San Diego's growing Hispanic community years before Latino-focused supermarkets became commonplace throughout the region. The arrival of Sprouts at the former Pancho Villa building therefore brings the Boney family's grocery legacy full circle, although the transition has prompted mixed emotions among longtime customers who viewed Pancho Villa as more than simply a grocery store. Following Pancho Villa's closure, several parts of its legacy found new homes elsewhere in San Diego. Windmill Farms Community Market acquired the store's famous tortilla-making equipment and original recipes, along with several longtime tortilla makers, allowing the iconic flour tortillas to continue production. Meanwhile, North Park Produce hired some former Pancho Villa employees and introduced a "Super Mercado" section inspired by the neighborhood favorite. Now the building itself is beginning a new era. Sprouts spokesperson Mychael Ramirez confirmed the new location will employ between 80 and 100 full- and part-time team members, with hiring expected to begin soon. "Sprouts Farmers Market is excited for our new store in San Diego as we bring our wide assortment of fresh, local and better-for-you products to the community," Ramirez said. Earlier this year, San Diego's Hearing Officer approved a Conditional Use Permit allowing the store to sell beer and wine, adding to Sprouts' signature mix of organic produce, natural foods, specialty grocery items, vitamins, bulk products and prepared meals. The North Park opening is part of Sprouts' continued national expansion. Headquartered in Phoenix, the company now operates more than 480 stores across 25 states and plans to open more than 40 additional locations during 2026, including several throughout California. The El Cajon Boulevard store joins existing San Diego-area Sprouts locations in Pacific Beach, La Mesa, Chula Vista and elsewhere, though it will become the company's newest flagship location serving North Park, Normal Heights, City Heights and surrounding neighborhoods. While many residents remain nostalgic for Pancho Villa and the cultural role it played in the community, October 2 will mark the beginning of a new chapter for one of San Diego's most prominent grocery properties. Sprouts Farmers Market is scheduled to open on October 2 at 3245 El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego's North Park/Normal Heights neighborhood. Originally published on August 5, 2026.
Sprouts Farmers Market reported second-quarter results in line with expectations, with total sales rising 5% to $2.3 billion. The growth was driven by seven new store openings, while comparable-store sales declined 1%. Net income reached $129 million, and diluted earnings per share increased 1% to $1.37. CEO Jack Sinclair cited cautious consumer spending and weaker June trends due to difficult prior-year comparisons. E-commerce sales grew over 12%, and Sprouts-brand products showed strength. The company maintained its full-year outlook, projecting 5.5%–6.5% sales growth and diluted EPS of $5.32–$5.40. Sprouts plans to open 42 net new stores in 2026, ending the quarter with 490 stores across 25 states.
