Research Student Workers (contractor) at Microsoft provide a dynamic environment for research careers with a network of world-class research labs led by globally-recognized scientists and engineers. Our researchers and engineers pursue innovation in a range of scientific and technical disciplines to help solve complex challenges in diverse fields, including computing, healthcare, economics, and the environment.

The Knowledge and Language team at Azure Cognitive Services Research is on a mission to advance the state of the art in NLP and Knowledge research and deliver towards our company vision for how intelligent cloud and intelligent edge will shape the next phase of innovation. The team includes top researchers from across Microsoft to create a center of excellence.

We are looking for exceptional student workers to work on cutting edge research in Natural Language Understanding & Generation, Knowledge Graph, Pre-trained Language Models and Multimodal research.

The mission of our team is to make fundamental contributions to advancing the state-of-the-art in AI technology. To this end, we conduct research on forward-looking topics such as text summarization, pre-trained models and dialogues. Our research has contributed, and will continue contributing, to various Microsoft products, such as Microsoft Teams, Office, Bing, Cortana, and Xbox as well as third party applications through the Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services.

Student workers are expected to utilize and design state-of-the-art results in deep learning in NLP and implement models using required frameworks.

Responsibilities

Student workers put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Students not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the period, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other students and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community.

Roles/Openings:

Data Scientist: Python

• Research and develop audio/speech/NLP/vision algorithms with Python
• Run training jobs and analyze the results and special cases, fixing bugs
• Optimize algorithms and models for speed and accuracy on target hardware

Software Engineer, C# or Java

• Build up prototypes, exploring new ideas/open source tools

Preferred Qualifications for Data Scientist

• Must be accepted or currently enrolled in a Master or PhD program in Computer Science or related STEM field.
• 1+ year of experience in NLP or multimodal research with hands-on deep learning experience.
• Excellent communication and writing skills.
• Experience with Python is a must.

Preferred Qualifications for Software Engineering

• BSc or MSc degree in Computer Science or related STEM field.
• Excellent communication and writing skills.
• Experience with C# or Java
