Requirements
  • A high school student or equivalent qualification is required.
  • At least 18 years of age is required.
  • Previous experience working with children is required, with a minimum of two previous camp seasons.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications, and Child Abuse Prevention training must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility are required to supervise program activities in indoor and outdoor locations.
  • The ability to work in environments subject to extreme heat and humidity is required.
  • The ability to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid is required.
  • The ability to plan, lead, and participate in activities in varied outdoor and indoor settings is required.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise a group of children in a seasonal day camp and provide a safe, pleasant, and caring atmosphere.
  • Establish positive relationships with children and their parents or caregivers and communicate daily happenings and incidents to them.
  • Keep campers and counselors focused and engaged in camp activities.
  • Assist the Specialist during activity periods and assist camp staff with themes, special events, trips, and camp activities.
  • Respond to campers’ needs and encourage their youth development progress.
  • Help maintain camp cleanliness and group control, including facilitating lunchtime activities.
  • Use redirection and positive reinforcement to guide camper behavior.
  • Teach and instill the YMCA’s Four Core Values of Caring, Respect, Honesty, and Responsibility.
  • Maintain the group backpack, including the group binder, camper information sheets, necessary medications for off-site activities, and first aid kit.
  • Handle behavior, medical, and other incidents within the group and request assistance from camp leadership when necessary.
  • Attend staff meetings and complete all required training.
  • Uphold camp safety standards, maintain constant face counts, and practice risk-management and disaster policies and procedures.
  • Follow YMCA aquatics policy guidelines and complete designated aquatic-activity assignments.
  • Help expedite pool arrival and departure procedures.
  • Follow YMCA, American Camp Association, and New Jersey licensing standards and procedures.
  • Secure and submit accident reports and report immediate concerns to the Camp Director or nearest supervisor.
  • Supervise bus counselors and help ensure safe, efficient, and engaging bus procedures, including leading songs, stories, and games.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor, wear the camp T-shirt daily, and remain punctual and reliable.
  • Create a positive and nurturing learning environment that supports youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Desired Qualifications
  • Interest in one or more of outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs or music, skits, sports, aquatics, and recreational games is preferred.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations is preferred.
