About the Department
Brock University’s Department of Sociology has 15 full-time faculty members and another 3 members who are jointly appointed with Women’s and Gender Studies. We offer BA degrees in Sociology and Critical Criminology to approximately 450 majors, with minors and concentrations also available in these programs. Additionally, we offer concentrations in Applied Social Research and Data Analysis and Critical Animal Studies. Our MA program in Critical Sociology admits approximately 10 students annually for either a 4-term major research paper with coursework program or a 6-term thesis with coursework program.
The prevailing philosophical orientation of the Sociology Department and its associated programs is critical analysis of contemporary social problems as an avenue to advancing social justice. This philosophy requires an educational approach of engagement, which entails supportive, individualized, and student-centered pedagogical strategies that prioritize spaces for self-reflexivity. Student engagement is also facilitated through experiential learning and small group learning opportunities, as well as our departmental governance structures involving active student representation.
About the position
The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track teaching-intensive position in the Department of Sociology at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning January 1, 2026. The Department’s Critical Criminology (honours) and Sociology undergraduate programs include common required courses (introduction to sociology, theory and methods), as well as several cross-listed electives. All faculty members teach students in both programs, providing a sociological foundation to the criminology degree, and resulting in flexible program pathways for students.
The workload of a Teaching-Intensive Faculty member shall normally be 60% teaching (equivalent to 3 half courses per Fall and Winter terms), 20% research/scholarly/creative activities and 20% service.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD in Sociology, Criminology, Public Health Policy, Social Policy, Social Work, Social Psychology or a closely related field by the date of the appointment or shortly thereafter; demonstrated excellence in university teaching; and demonstrated competence in research. While we are open to attracting a wide variety of candidates, those who demonstrate decolonial and anti-racist praxis in teaching and research and can contribute to Indigenizing the Department and the University are especially encouraged to apply.
We seek candidates with a record of demonstrated excellence in teaching and competence in research in the broad area of Critical Criminology. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of courses in our Critical Criminology and Sociology degree programs, including in our concentration in Applied Social Research and Data Analysis. In particular, the candidate will be required to teach Critical Approaches to Applied Social Research (4P11: ~ 20 students) and Quantitative Data Analysis II (3P12: ~ 120 students), which requires expertise in multivariate statistical analysis and the use of SPSS or other statistical applications. The candidate is also expected to contribute to curriculum development in our Sociology and Critical Criminology degree programs by developing new courses that draw on their research expertise.
While the specific area of research expertise is open, we especially invite applicants doing sociological research in areas such as carcerality and abolition, community-engaged critical criminology, crimes of the powerful, crime and racial justice, critical pedagogy, critical policing studies, critical surveillance studies, evaluation and needs assessment research, harm reduction, oversight and accountability in the Critical Justice System, public health policy, social policy, and zemiology and the Global South.
In addition to engaging in a program of teaching and research, the successful candidates will be expected to participate in the affairs of the Department and fulfill service commitments to the Department and the university.
