Requirements
  • New York State medical doctor license.
  • Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Family Practice, or substantially equivalent training and expertise.
  • Competence in caring for patients suffering from advanced cancer.
  • Ability and attitude consistent with Calvary Hospital’s caring philosophy and tradition.
  • A medical degree from an approved educational institution.
Responsibilities
  • Provide primary care to patients admitted to Calvary Hospital.
  • Perform and record a history and physical examination for each admitted patient.
  • Make daily rounds, write orders as appropriate, and document findings and the plan of care or treatment in the medical record.
  • Share weekday, weekend, and holiday on-call coverage.
  • Prepare a complete and legible medical record for each patient, including diagnosis, treatment justification, treatment outcome, and post-hospital care plans where appropriate.
  • Participate in patient-safety improvement activities, including implementing and monitoring the safety program.
  • Participate in developing patient-care policies and procedures and quality-assessment and performance-improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental and hospital quality review, assessment, and performance-improvement functions.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with family members and significant others regarding prognosis, care plans, treatment, and medications.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary assessment and care with Nursing, Social Work, Nutritional Services, Pastoral Care, Clinical Review or Case Management, and other appropriate services.
  • Maintain communication with covering physicians and other members of the interdisciplinary care team to ensure continuity of care.
  • Provide liaison support to the Calvary Hospital Department of Medicine and participate in Medical Staff and other designated meetings.
  • Cooperate with and coordinate The Joint Commission functional activities with advice, direction, and counsel.
  • Comply with hospital bylaws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, legal and ethical practice standards, and the Code of Conduct; report potential compliance matters appropriately.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Medical Director or Executive Medical Director.

Calvary Hospital provides palliative and hospice care for terminally ill adults, including those with advanced cancer, with inpatient facilities in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens and Home Care and Hospice Services across the greater New York area. Care comes from multidisciplinary teams that offer round-the-clock symptom relief, comfort, and emotional and spiritual support in hospitals and extend that care into patients’ homes through Home Care and Hospice services.
