Requirements
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC) approved by a State's Department of Education or recognized accredited organization.
  • Must have completed Machinist apprenticeship or have four years of related machinist or machine shop or diesel/heavy equipment experience as a journeyman, and ability to demonstrate proficiency via written exam.
  • Must possess mechanical ability and ability to use various electrical meters and testing devices.
  • Must possess ability to read and correctly interpret blueprints, shop drawings and/or schematics.
  • Must possess a working understanding of mechanical principles, specifically diesel mechanics.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of machine maintenance and lubrication procedures.
  • Must possess mechanical ability and/or knowledge to repair and install various equipment components.
  • Must possess working knowledge of hand and/or power tool operation and maintenance.
  • Must possess ability to demonstrate machinist skills via a pre-employment examination. During the one-year probationary period, all employees are tested or evaluated to document their satisfactory performance.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
Responsibilities
  • Responsible to maintain all LIRR rolling stock units and associated machinery in a state of good repair to provide a safe, reliable fleet for our customers.
  • Trouble-shoot, maintain, repair, and install mechanical components and sub-components of cranes, conveyors, turntables, transfer tables, car wash machines, diesel locomotives, engines, and other heavy equipment/machines.
  • Clean tools, equipment and parts with wire brushes, torches, and cleaning solvents.
  • Inspect various equipment types for structural damage, integrity, and wear according to Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads and LIRR policies/regulations. Responsible for grinding, boring, cutting, bending, sizing, shaping, slotting, milling, planning, sanding, fabricating, and filing of various machine and engine parts. Will operate grinders, borers, drills, sanders, lathes, and milling machinery.
  • Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, shop drawings, technical manuals, and other written documentation in the completion of assigned tasks.
  • Inspects various engine fluids for viscosity and presence.
  • Must be familiar with basic machine shop mathematics, indexing and operation of various shop machinery.
Desired Qualifications
  • EPA Freon Handling Certification.
  • Electric and/or Arc Welding Certification.
  • Automotive, truck and/or aviation engine servicing experience.
  • Welding experience or certification.
