Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Hearst reported 2025 revenue of $13.5 billion, up 3%, and record profits.
  • A+E reaches 414 million households, giving Hearst global content distribution.
  • DallasNews and Austin American-Statesman deals deepen Hearst’s local newspaper footprint.

What critics are saying

  • A+E still faces declining linear cable viewership; September 2026 close won’t fix that.
  • Fitch's profits tied to bond markets; a 2027 slump cuts Hearst's largest generator.
  • If Fitch loses ratings credibility, Hearst's profit engine and conglomerate valuation collapse.

What makes Hearst unique

  • Hearst controls Fitch Group, A+E, and 360 businesses, spanning B2B and media.
  • In August 2026, Hearst bought Disney’s 50% A+E stake, ending the JV.
  • CEO Steven Swartz said 2025 profits came mostly from B2B, especially Fitch Group.

Disney sells 50% A+E Global Media stake to Hearst for over $1B

Disney is selling its 50% stake in A+E Global Media to joint venture partner Hearst Communications in an all-cash deal worth over $1 billion, according to reports. The transaction is expected to be announced at Disney's earnings call next week. A+E Global Media owns cable networks A&E, History, Lifetime, and FYI, as well as A+E Studios. Disney and Hearst launched a sale process last year through Wells Fargo. Whilst profitable and debt-free, A+E Global has faced declining linear viewership like other cable networks. The company has adapted through early adoption of FAST channels and owns much of its content library. A+E Global Media President and Chairman Paul Buccieri will continue leading the company. This marks Disney's first major move to reduce its traditional television footprint.
