Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least two years of experience working in a call center, customer service, and/or healthcare department or environment, or an equivalent combination totaling two or more years, is required.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills are required.
  • The ability to multitask is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Fire Life Safety Training for Los Angeles City is required; if the applicant does not have the card upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for access to USC academic medical centers and the USC Health Sciences Campus.
  • Answer, screen, and direct incoming and outgoing telephone calls, electronic messages, omnichannel contacts, and web-based communications using organizational communication-management systems.
  • Respond to basic inquiries and refer other inquiries to appropriate medical personnel.
  • Contact and distribute messages to medical personnel using text, voice, email, and other electronic methods.
  • Page physicians according to internal procedures and perform follow-up checks on open pages while on shift and before leaving the shift.
  • Schedule, reschedule, cancel, and confirm initial and follow-up medical appointments using the organizational scheduling system.
  • Register patients, verify insurance coverage, determine whether insurance is contracted with USC, and advise patients of estimated financial responsibility when appropriate.
  • Perform data entry and maintain data integrity, medical data, patient appointment records, databases for bumps and cancellations, and information in the Call Management system and Qgenda.
  • Coordinate care with patient coordinators, nurses, and physicians to secure appointments for patients and referring physicians.
  • Process messages in accordance with departmental procedures and HIPAA requirements.
  • Use organizationally defined systems for patient communication.
  • Contribute as a productive team member to the Patient Access Center and USC/Keck.
  • Follow USC/Keck communications standards and policies.
  • Accept alternate assignments within the organization as directed by management.
  • Work from home when organizationally deployed, following departmental remote-work guidelines and expectations.
  • Carry out service-recovery activity and escalate matters to a Level 3/Lead or Supervisor when appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in healthcare, business, or operations is strongly preferred.
  • Vocational certificates in healthcare, appointment scheduling, registration, insurance verification, or medical assisting are preferred.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA compliance and various health-insurance types is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is strongly preferred.
  • High-level computer literacy and experience with practice-management scheduling systems are preferred.
  • Bilingual ability in Spanish, Chinese, or other languages is preferred.
