Wall Street demands proof AI spending pays off as tech firms commit over $700B

Investor sentiment around artificial intelligence is shifting towards demanding concrete returns rather than just ambitious spending promises. Tech companies plan to invest over $700 billion in AI this year, with expectations of further increases. Recent earnings revealed a clear divide. Microsoft, Amazon, and Palantir saw double-digit stock price jumps after demonstrating strong results. Microsoft maintained $19.9 billion in quarterly free cash flow despite heavy AI investments, whilst Amazon's cloud division posted its fastest growth in four years, with its AI business exceeding a $25 billion annual run rate. Meanwhile, Meta Platforms, Alphabet, and Tesla faced investor scepticism over their substantial AI expenditures without comparable proof of returns. The market has entered what analysts call the "show me" phase, where tangible financial results from AI investments now matter more than spending commitments alone.

Amazon hikes Echo, Fire TV, and Kindle prices up to 60% due to memory chip shortage

Amazon has raised prices across its hardware product line, including Echo smart speakers, Fire TV devices, Kindle e-readers, and eero networking systems. The Echo Dot increased from $49.99 to $79.99, whilst the Kindle Paperwhite rose from $159.99 to $199.99. Fire TV Stick 4K Max jumped from $59.99 to $84.99. An Amazon spokeswoman confirmed the increases stem from significant rises in memory and storage component costs affecting the consumer electronics industry. The company said it absorbed these costs as long as possible before adjusting prices. The move follows similar actions by Apple, Microsoft, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Asus, all responding to memory chip shortages driven by AI compute demand. Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy recently revealed the company expects to spend $220 billion this year on capital expenditures, primarily for AI data centres.

Starlink hits 11,000 satellites in orbit while Amazon's Kuiper lags at 394

Elon Musk announced that Starlink now has 11,000 satellites in orbit, vastly outpacing Amazon's Kuiper constellation, which has only 394 satellites. OneWeb sits in second place with 654 satellites. According to the KeepTrack satellite catalogue, Starlink accounts for more than half of all 19,447 tracked payloads in Earth orbit. SpaceX has launched 12,444 Starlink satellites since May 2019, with roughly 1,660 already reentered. Amazon missed its 1,600-satellite July milestone and pushed its timeline to 2028. Meanwhile, Starlink already serves 12 million paying subscribers through SpaceX's Connectivity segment, which posted $4.29 billion in Q2 2026 revenue, up 66% year over year. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company plans to begin initial satellite internet service this year.

Amazon slips 0.5% as Walmart's weak sales signal pickier US consumers

Amazon shares fell approximately 0.5% to $258.72 on Friday, underperforming the broader market after Walmart's weak comparable sales highlighted consumer caution. While Americans continue spending, they are becoming more selective—a shift that affects Amazon's retail business. The company's second-quarter results showed sales jumping 20% to $200.6 billion and operating income reaching $27.5 billion. Amazon Web Services revenue surged 37% to $42.2 billion. However, Amazon expects roughly $220 billion in capital expenditures for 2026 as it invests heavily in AI chips, data centres, and cloud capacity. The stock trades 5.15% above its estimated fair value at roughly 21 times trailing earnings, leaving investors questioning when the massive spending will translate into substantial cash flow.

Major US retailers pocket $5B in tariff refunds as Walmart gets $2.9B, Target $994M, but shoppers see little benefit

Major US retailers have received over $5 billion in tariff refunds this week alone, with Walmart getting $2.9 billion, Target $994 million, and Home Depot $730 million. The Trump administration is refunding approximately $166 billion in tariff revenue after the Supreme Court struck down its sweeping tariff policy, having returned $100 billion so far. Despite studies showing consumers bore the brunt of initial tariff costs through higher prices, most companies are reinvesting the refunds rather than passing savings to shoppers. Retail executives indicated in earnings calls they plan to put the money back into their businesses. Consumers have filed class-action lawsuits against companies receiving refunds, but none have concluded. Americans have limited recourse to recover funds if companies don't voluntarily lower prices.
