Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 5 years of work experience are required.
  • Proficiency using SolidWorks to model complex structural sheet metal assemblies is required.
  • Proficiency using SolidWorks to create complex plumbing systems and electrical harnesses is required.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM and managing design libraries is required.
  • Ability to read written specification documents and apply engineering knowledge and creativity to design products that meet those specifications is required.
  • Ability to identify design problems accurately and completely and develop prompt, complete, and clear solutions is required.
  • A thorough understanding of automotive engineering principles is required.
  • Ability to apply automotive engineering principles to adapt drivetrains for additional power take-off components is required.
  • Understanding of the mechanical and electrical requirements of purchased parts used in the automotive and fire industries is required.
  • Understanding of the capabilities and limitations of CNC waterjet machinery, CNC press brakes, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and common machine-shop and metal-shop tooling is required.
  • Hands-on automotive or aviation repair experience is required.
  • Ability to create drawings for a manufacturing facility is required.
  • Ability to create assembly and welding work instructions is required.
  • Ability to use fluid dynamics with common fire-industry plumbing products and procedures to design complex hydrodynamic systems is required.
  • Ability to maintain an extreme level of detail is required.
  • Ability to learn and translate essential technical details regarding fire apparatus using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing software is required.
Responsibilities
  • Design emergency vehicle bodies and chassis-cab accessories using SolidWorks software.
  • Produce drawings for shop employees to use when fabricating and assembling emergency vehicles.
  • Ensure computer-aided design system configurations include all large and small components to prevent conflicts during assembly.
  • Understand and account for cable routing during the design of complex sheet-metal assemblies.
  • Report to the Director of Operations to synchronize design and production scheduling.
  • Follow company safety procedures while observing or operating on the production floor.
  • Ensure products are consistent with customer requests.
  • Generate and maintain parts lists for ordering the necessary parts for each vehicle based on its specifications and design.
  • Maintain an organized parts and design library accessible to fellow engineers.
  • Present vehicle designs to customers during pre-construction meetings and record notes.
  • Communicate design updates regularly to management and assigned salespeople.
  • Check shop work regularly for quality assurance and communicate with shop staff by providing advice and feedback.
  • Work with the team to brainstorm, troubleshoot, and produce designs, procedures, and products.
  • Interact with customers, staff, and vendors in an enthusiastic, helpful, and professional manner.
Desired Qualifications
  • General welding knowledge is preferred.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM, Inventor, Pro/ENGINEER, or Creo is preferred.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician experience is preferred.
  • Emergency vehicle sales or service experience is preferred.
  • Fire suppression experience is preferred.
  • Automotive or high-voltage electrical design or repair experience is preferred.
  • Commercial or residential construction experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 1901, NFPA 1906, or NFPA 70 is preferred.
