Requirements
  • Current provisional employee in Class 7395 with at least 2,080 hours worked in Class 7395.
  • Successful completion of a recognized three-year Iron Worker Apprenticeship Program and three years of verifiable journey-level experience as an ornamental iron worker, or a combination of eight years of verifiable training and experience as an ornamental iron worker, including three years at the journey level.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license and ability to remain insurable under the department's automobile liability insurance policy.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders and extension ladders at heights up to 220 feet, work on scaffolds and mechanical high-lifts, and stoop and crawl into confined spaces.
  • Ability to operate equipment, use hand and power tools, and lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Ability to pass a medical qualification examination for respirator use and wear face-fitting respiratory protection.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and potentially hazardous environments under controlled conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Fabricate, install, dismantle, maintain, and repair structural members, steel rolling doors, chain link fences, fire escapes, drop ladders, hand rails, guard rails, ornamental iron gates, and other metal structures.
  • Install and repair steel rolling doors, including removing and replacing damaged steel slats, guides, and rolling door operating gear.
  • Fabricate new parts.
  • Install and repair chain link fences and gates and prepare labor and material cost estimates when required.
  • Install and service steel and aluminum sash.
  • Install and service fire escapes and inspect drop ladders.
  • Fabricate and install, or repair, hand rails, guard rails, and play equipment.
  • Fabricate and install ornamental iron gates, fences, and window grills.
  • Fabricate and install rebar.
  • Perform arc welding, acetylene welding, and MIG welding.
  • Maintain shop equipment and order and maintain records of materials and supplies.
  • Drive city vehicles to transport personnel, tools, equipment, and supplies to changing job sites or perform job duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Some positions may require a valid California Class B driver's license, welding certification, and/or experience installing or maintaining steel rolling doors.
