Requirements
  • Graduate of a post-secondary vocational or trade school or holder of a bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Microbiology or another related science field.
  • Ability to read, speak, and write English.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to perform food analyses using standard biological methodologies.
  • Experience with nucleic acid extraction and polymerase chain reaction analysis.
  • Knowledge of public health policies and regulations and the fundamental principles of biological and laboratory practices applicable to biological analyses using various analyzer systems.
  • Ability to identify potential hazards found during biological analyses when processes are conventional and literature on the hazard is readily available.
  • Ability to investigate and troubleshoot methods during sample analysis.
Responsibilities
  • Review biological properties, matrix properties, and risk categories in the context of pertinent guidelines, regulations, and customer requirements.
  • Select methods and analyze samples to obtain requested data using classical microbiology with non-selective and selective media, nucleic acid extraction and polymerase chain reaction, next-generation genome sequencing, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, scintillation counters, and other rapid microbiological and molecular techniques.
  • Recommend method modifications and implement and optimize new methods in cooperation with Department of the Army civilian microbiologists and microbiological technicians.
  • Assist in training new analysts assigned to similar work.
  • Review analytical data generated by multiple team members for correctness, completeness, and scientific integrity.
  • Report data using the electronic laboratory information management system.
