Requirements
- A Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling-accredited program is required.
- Board certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling is required; candidates who are not yet certified must be board-eligible at hire and obtain certification within one year.
- South Carolina genetic counselor licensure is required, or the candidate must be eligible for licensure; limited licensure may be obtained while awaiting American Board of Genetic Counseling results.
Responsibilities
- Elicit medical and family histories and construct pedigrees to assess the risk of genetic disease occurrence or recurrence.
- Evaluate complex medical and genetic literature from varied sources and incorporate it into patient counseling and management.
- Explain available testing options, including testing risks, benefits, and limitations.
- Coordinate genetic testing and the return of results for patients and families.
- Provide genetic education, counseling, and psychosocial support for patients and families.
- Review referrals and triage cases.
- Support the operations of the genetics clinic.
- Perform administrative and day-to-day operational clinical activities, including record review and patient charting.
- Write detailed consultation reports that convey complex genetic concepts to patients and referring physicians.
- Collaborate with the genetic counseling team, physician supervisors, and multidisciplinary care teams.
- Facilitate referrals as indicated.
- Demonstrate in-depth medical knowledge in the practice area and interpret most genetic results with minimal oversight or guidance.
- Identify or create patient support resources for indications encountered in practice.
- Provide clinical supervision for genetic counseling students.
- Teach genetics and genetic counseling content to medical and genetic trainees.
- Implement systems to collect, maintain, and analyze operational data.
- Collaborate on research and quality improvement projects.
- Mentor newly hired genetic counselors.
