Corewell Health breaks ground on South Haven urgent care facility. * By JULIE NEWELL Paxton Media Group * 2 hrs ago SOUTH HAVEN - Representatives from Corewell Health, the city of South Haven and South Haven Township gathered Wednesday to break ground at the new South Haven urgent care center. "We're partnering together to make access to care more accessible and local," Corewell Health in Southwest Michigan President Natalie Baggio said. "Ultimately, people are going to have the care at the right time and the right location." The care center will have 23 exam rooms, four procedure rooms and will offer a variety of services including urgent care and primary care. "The urgent care will be open 12 hours out of the day (and) it will have X-ray accessibility and laboratory accessibility included in it," Dr. Michelino Mancini said. "In addition to that, we'll have primary care - which includes pediatric care at that location - and primary care will be there five days a week. Then we'll have orthopedics, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery and pulmonology." The construction is set to begin immediately and finish in July of 2027. "Our goal is to be done and live by the end of July next year," Director of Planning, Design and Construction Phil Cooper said. "It's (the center) our ICC concept, which is 'integrated care campus.'... It's a design that accommodates the ability to change and shift as the needs of the community shifts." Among the community members who attended the groundbreaking were South Haven Mayor Annie Brown, South Haven Township Supervisor Ross Stein and Council Member Tom Capps, who campaigned on getting better health care in South Haven. "I think this is great," Capps said. "South Haven has needed it for a long time. I think it's great for South Haven, I'm glad we got it." The new center will be located at 71989 County Road 288, just off of Phoenix Road in South Haven. "Our City Manager Kate Hosier is amazing and very proactive and about a year ago she met with people from Corewell and told them what we needed," Brown said. "This is exactly what we need and it's only just and right that people in South Haven get the health care that they need."

Project SEARCH offers training for young adults with disabilities. June 30, 2026 TROY - A school-to-work training program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities is changing lives. The program is called Project SEARCH, and it helps individuals ages 18-26 gain the skills needed to pursue entry-level employment opportunities. Locally, the program is facilitated through Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital in partnership with the Troy School District. "It takes place at the host business, where they learn soft skills and job skills that they can then put to use at the host business or in their local community," said coordinator Chris Evans. "Our host business happens to be the Troy Corewell Hospital, but there are many sites throughout the state of Michigan (such as) hotels or airports, (and) Michigan State University." Project SEARCH started at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in 1996. Corewell Health has been involved for around 15 years. "The local school districts apply to the program, and then there's an interview and skills assessment process where we talk to the families and talk to the interns, and then we bring them in to see who would be the best fit for the program," Evans said. "The students that come to the program are either right from high school (where) they received a diploma and they're going into Project SEARCH, almost like a fifth year, or they're still a student or not receiving a diploma, and and they go onto a post-secondary program in the area, and from there, they join Project SEARCH," he said. The program is the length of one school year, usually August through June. The classroom portion teaches professionalism, listening skills, etiquette, interview skills, public speaking and utilizing feedback or constructive criticism, among other skills. The internship portion instructs students with on-the-job training, where each intern will work and learn in different departments within the hospital for a few weeks before moving onto another department. One of the Troy program's interns, Maddie Wallace, is utilizing a Troy School District program funded through the state government called Michigan Works, which pays her while she works toward the goal of being hired by Corewell. She plans to work in nutritional services where she would serve patient meals as part of the tray line in the kitchen. "Project SEARCH has been life-changing for me, through the support and guidance of Chris (Evans), the skills trainers, and the hospital staff who believed in me before I even believed in myself. They helped me gain self-confidence that I never thought I had," Wallace said via email. "Also, Project SEARCH meant a lot to me because it helped me build friendships with the interns and staff, and (gain) job skills that will help me in the future." Lexi Hugel is also a Project SEARCH intern through Michigan Works. She plans to be a nursing assistant in the post-anesthesia care unit at Corewell. "Project SEARCH was wonderful. It gave me an opportunity to meet lifelong friends while giving me a chance to grow and learn new skills," Hugel said. "Chris (Evans), the skill trainers and hospital staff taught me so much. The staff and other interns came to feel like family."

Corewell Health Pennock Hospital expands rehab services with foundation support. June 25, 2026 Expansion of orthopedic clinic services makes physical therapy more convenient and accessible for patients. Corewell Health Pennock Hospital is expanding access to rehabilitation services in Hastings, thanks to a $32,000 grant from Corewell Health Foundation Pennock Hospital, supported by local donors. Corewell Health Pennock Hospital is adding on-site physical therapy services at the Corewell Health Orthopedic Clinic at 840 Cook Road, offering a more convenient option for patients receiving orthopedic care. The Foundation grant is funding the equipment needed to support this service expansion. Physical therapy will continue at the main hospital campus on Green Street alongside this new option. This expansion comes as demand for rehabilitation services continues to grow locally. Adding physical therapy services at the orthopedic clinic will improve scheduling availability and help patients receive comprehensive care in one location.
