Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in a hardware engineering field such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Robotics, or Applied Physics; alternatively, a Master's degree with 2+ years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • A deep understanding of optical and mechanical fundamentals.
  • Experience using computer-aided design software, specifically SolidWorks, to turn concepts into designs.
  • Hands-on skills in mechanical assembly, wiring, soldering, electronics controllers, machine shop tools, and 3D printing.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the transition of new optomechanical designs from research and development prototypes to stable, producible manufacturing platforms, including design, fixturing, process development, and reliability testing to military and environmental standards such as MIL-STD-810.
  • Own the success of a platform in production by driving resolution of failures, scaling problems, and unexpected performance issues through component redesign, test-setup rebuilding, or hands-on laboratory work.
  • Design and build production tools, including automation cells, test fixtures, experimental setups, and precision optomechanical alignment procedures.
  • Investigate failures to determine root causes and drive corrective action across design, process, and manufacturing.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience taking a product from prototype through new product introduction into production.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers, vendors, or suppliers on tooling and fixturing.
  • Exposure to standard manufacturing engineering and supply chain best practices.
  • Familiarity with data-analysis software tools such as Python, MATLAB, and MINITAB, or with printed circuit board prototyping.

Pendar Technologies develops handheld Raman devices, such as the Pendar X10 and Robot Integration Kit, for real-time, on-site chemical analysis and remote identification. The systems use wavelength-tunable Quantum Cascade Laser arrays to excite samples and capture Raman signals, enabling fast chemical detection with possible standoff and robotic integration. They work with researchers, clinicians, and government customers (including the U.S. Army and DHS) and earn revenue from direct device and kit sales as well as grants and pilot programs. The aim is to be a leading provider of practical, portable chemical analysis tools that deliver fast, actionable results in field, clinical, and national-security environments.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Pendar updated X10 software in November 2025, adding 1,000 threat-library items.
  • DHS SBIR Phase II runs through December 2026, extending non-dilutive funding.
  • The 2026 Navy QCL program signals ongoing defense demand for its core laser tech.

What critics are saying

  • Pendar’s federal revenue depends on small SBIR awards like NASA’s $156,448 contract.
  • If Navy and DHS pilots stall, Pendar lacks visible commercial scale beyond government buyers.
  • Larger chemical-sensing vendors can copy robot payload workflows and squeeze margins by 2027.

What makes Pendar Technologies unique

  • Pendar X10 delivers 6-foot standoff Raman identification for hazardous materials.
  • Robot Integration Kit turns X10 into a UGV payload for remote reconnaissance.
  • Pendar’s QCL-based spectrometer work targets defense-grade sensing, not commodity lab equipment.
