  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • Must meet certification eligibility upon entry and obtain one of the listed Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, categorical, molecular diagnostics, histocompatibility, or microbiology certifications within 18 months.
  • One year of work or training experience in a hospital laboratory is preferred.
  • Must demonstrate the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
  • Must have sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, especially activities affecting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers.
  • Must be able to organize heavy workflow with minimal supervision and adapt to multiple ongoing priorities.
  • Must have strong attention to detail and maintain accuracy.
  • Must be able to use independent judgment to recognize problems, identify causes, and take corrective action.
  • Must possess basic computer knowledge and operate hospital or laboratory information systems and office software to maintain patient, testing, and related records.
  • Must be able to work independently with little or no direct supervision.
  • Must be able to recognize changes critical to patient care.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and complex qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations using various analyzers and manual methods.
  • Accession and process specimens expeditiously to deliver quality laboratory results effectively and cost-efficiently.
  • Organize workload, set priorities, assist others, and perform additional tasks as needed.
  • Meet turnaround-time expectations defined by management.
  • Demonstrate the six elements of competency for test systems used to generate patient test results in all assigned areas.
  • Recognize, investigate, and help resolve test discrepancies; take appropriate corrective action and notify management and the medical director for follow-up.
  • Perform instrument calibrations, validations, quality-control testing, maintenance, and function checks.
  • Adjust the work schedule to accommodate departmental and organizational needs and use the time-recording system appropriately.
  • Use resources efficiently and restock section inventory as needed.
  • Teach students, new employees, and others as assigned by the manager.
  • Participate in laboratory and organization-wide initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the patient-care team by communicating and reporting pertinent patient-care information and data comprehensively.
  • Review and use standard operating procedures and suggest improvements.
  • Seek opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies through continual development.
  • Remain available for on-call coverage during emergencies.
  • Travel within or outside the Houston metropolitan area as required by the department.
