Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing is required.
  • A current Washington State Registered Nurse license or current Nurse Licensure Compact multistate license is required; the multistate license primary state of residence must be updated to Washington within 60 days of hire, subject to specified waiver circumstances.
  • Applicants without previous oncology experience will receive additional training and support.
  • A current Basic Life Support American Heart Association Health Provider Card, or an equivalent course such as American Red Cross, is required and must be renewed every two years.
  • Additional certification may be required depending on the department.
  • An Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Provider Card is required within three months of hire.

Responsibilities
  • Assess patients’ physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs and evaluate their adaptation to health changes.
  • Develop plans of care based on patients’ diseases, symptoms, and responses to treatment.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers about disease processes, treatment, side effects, and symptom management.
  • Coordinate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care.
  • Refer patients, families, and caregivers to appropriate clinical resources and professionals, including social work, home health care, and clinical nutrition.
  • Implement, evaluate, and modify plans of care.
  • Integrate research and evidence-based knowledge into clinical practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of standard treatments and medication side effects.
  • Perform nursing assessments, review relevant laboratory results, and assess pain and other symptoms.
  • Administer intravenous hydration, electrolyte replacement, chemotherapy, biotherapy, and blood products.
  • Use correct precautions when handling potentially hazardous treatment agents.
  • Follow procedures for safely disposing of materials used to administer chemotherapy, other hazardous agents, and blood products.
  • Provide patient and family education in coordination with treatment and care plans.
  • Conduct learning-needs assessments for patients and caregivers.
  • Ensure patients have clinic contact information and understand when to call if symptoms arise or persist after infusion therapy.
  • Communicate or escalate patient symptoms and concerns to providers as needed.
  • Collaborate with the care team to provide effective and efficient patient care.
  • Request consultation from social work, dietitians, spiritual care, and other supportive-care teams when indicated.
  • Participate in continuing education, departmental projects, committee work, and quality-improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain knowledge of treatment regimens for all disease groups at Fred Hutch.
  • Maintain knowledge of communication standards for different sites and team models.
  • Train in specialties as needed across Fred Hutch community sites.
  • Maintain enhanced awareness of trends and practice changes across care areas.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Certification in oncology or a specialty practice area.
  • Two years of Registered Nurse oncology experience in an ambulatory infusion setting.
