Requirements
  • A college or university degree in a related field is required.
  • At least 7 years of work experience in a related job discipline is required.
  • Proficiency managing networked servers, including knowledge of switches, firewalls, network services, system utilities, hardware installation, and operating and application system installation, is required.
  • Proficiency managing high-performance computing systems, clusters, and advanced research computing infrastructure is required.
  • A strong understanding of research computing needs, including large-scale data management, analysis, scientific workflows, and job scheduling architectures, is required.
  • Familiarity with programming languages and tools commonly used in research, including Python, R, MATLAB, Jupyter, and Slurm, is required.
  • The role requires handling confidential and sensitive research data with discretion and adherence to security protocols.
Responsibilities
  • Lead day-to-day operations and project management for systems and network infrastructure, including hosted Windows and Linux departmental servers; application, database, email, file, and backup services; and core infrastructure services such as DNS, DHCP, and Active Directory.
  • Lead and manage a team of system administrators and research support staff, including assigning work, managing workflow, and creating professional development opportunities.
  • Manage and maintain the enterprise storage and storage area network environment, including troubleshooting, performance planning, capacity planning, and continuity planning.
  • Enhance security administration by working with the Booth Information Security team to maintain continuous risk assessments, review critical systems and identified threats, and produce operational policies and procedures documentation.
  • Collaborate with faculty, research teams, and leadership to understand computational needs and develop tailored technological solutions.
  • Assist in planning, designing, and implementing new systems, storage, automation, and virtualization technology.
  • Develop and implement strategies to advance research computing capabilities, assess existing infrastructure, and recommend necessary improvements.
  • Develop project plans, forecast budget needs, and manage financial resources to optimize operations and cost-effectiveness.
  • Represent the University's research computing interests by fostering partnerships with external organizations, national high-performance computing centers, and internal IT departments.
  • Maintain Booth's disaster recovery infrastructure and documentation, ensure systems and applications are protected according to their service-level agreements, and run biannual disaster recovery tests.
  • Ensure implementation of approved best practices and information technology policies that result in high-quality systems administration.
  • Manage creation of standards and procedures for production servers and manage installation, configuration, and maintenance of operating systems and utility software.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field such as computer science, engineering, or data science.
  • A master's degree.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Supervisory or team management experience.
  • Higher education industry experience.
  • Demonstrated project management skills for multiple simultaneous projects with competing demands.
  • Ability to work independently, identify opportunities for innovation, and recommend effective technological changes.
  • Leadership and collaboration skills for working with researchers, students, and IT professionals across multiple disciplines.
