Requirements
  • Five years of related experience and/or training.
  • Experience with water, storm, and sewer pipe installation and grading for roadways.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, blueprints, plans, and profiles.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply common-sense understanding to written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and resolve problems involving several concrete variables.
  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, use hands, reach, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and work on uneven ground.
  • Ability to frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, at heights, and in shafts or tunnels, with occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and loud noise.
Responsibilities
  • Review documents and plans and resolve questions before proceeding with work activities.
  • Examine blueprints, plans, and profiles to determine structure dimensions.
  • Direct and train the crew to perform work according to contract drawings and specifications within the production budget.
  • Act as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration-defined competent person on the job.
  • Select materials to ensure project conformance and plan ahead so materials are available when needed.
  • Plan project activity sequences with the Superintendent and Project Engineer using two-week schedule planning.
  • Assign workers to operate machinery and equipment, install trench boxes, install pipes, and perform related tasks.
  • Inspect subcontractor work for conformance with specifications.
  • Supervise workers performing utility installations and grading for roadwork.
  • Review production schedules and estimate worker-hour requirements for job completion.
  • Maintain a crew contact list and know crew members by name.
  • Conduct daily crew huddles, explain planned work and methods, and train inexperienced crew members.
  • Interpret company policies and enforce company disciplinary procedures when addressing employee problems.
  • Evaluate job safety issues and make necessary changes.
  • Enforce safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Recommend improvements to production methods, equipment performance, and product quality.
  • Suggest changes to working conditions and equipment use to improve crew efficiency.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems or assist workers in resolving them.
  • Initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Maintain accurate time sheets and production records, including verified quantities and detailed work locations, and submit time sheets on time.
  • Keep the job team informed of progress and problems.
  • Estimate, requisition, and inspect materials.
  • Set up machines and equipment and supervise their use.
  • Maintain a detailed daily job diary.
  • Hold a meaningful weekly crew safety meeting and file attendance and content reports.
  • Perform the activities of supervised workers.
  • Minimize punch-list items and finish work activities.
  • Direct, coordinate, and evaluate the crew, including directly supervising 3 to 5 employees and potentially managing a lead person supervising 2 to 3 additional employees.
  • Train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; address complaints; and resolve problems.
