Requirements
  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Two years of professional English/Spanish interpreting experience are required, with qualifying experience including official interpreting in a municipal, general jurisdiction, or United States District Court; medical interpreting in a clinic or hospital; or escort or conference interpreting for a government official or dignitary.
  • Post-secondary education in a Translation or Interpretation program may substitute for up to one year of required experience.
  • Candidates must hold an Arizona Court Interpreter Credentialing Program Tier 3 or Tier 4 credential, or obtain one within 24 months of hire if a credentialed candidate is unavailable.
  • Candidates must demonstrate in-depth written and spoken English and Spanish proficiency and familiarity with the socio-dialects of both languages.
  • Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation.
  • Candidates must be able to communicate information accurately and effectively, manage time and organizational tasks, complete assignments accurately, interpret confidential and sensitive information, multitask, and work in a high-volume, time-critical environment.
  • Candidates must be able to interpret and translate between Spanish and English in both directions.
  • Candidates must be able to establish effective working relationships and communicate effectively in written and verbal form.
  • Candidates must complete required Continuing Education Units and maintain good standing with the Arizona Court Interpreter Credentialing Program.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a thorough background and/or fingerprint check and fully disclosing felony and misdemeanor convictions.
Responsibilities
  • Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation between English and Spanish during court interviews, hearings, proceedings, and other out-of-court events.
  • Perform sight translations of court petitions, reports, notices, agreements, and other documents during interviews, hearings, and court proceedings.
  • Perform case-related and law-related research to prepare for in-court interpreting appearances.
  • Monitor caseloads, maintain statistics and service logs, update the department on case status, make scheduling recommendations, and communicate about logistics with court divisions and other stakeholders.
  • Translate and proofread court and legal documents between English and Spanish, ensuring accuracy, completeness, consistency, appropriate terminology, grammar, syntax, formatting, and adherence to court translation standards and style guidelines.
Desired Qualifications
  • Post-graduate education in Interpreting or Translation.
  • Professional interpreting experience in a general- or limited-jurisdiction court.
  • A Tier 3 or Tier 4 credential through the Arizona Court Interpreter Credentialing Program or an equivalent credential from another state credentialing authority.
