Requirements
  • Knowledge of operations, services and activities of animal shelter and/or animal control programs.
  • Knowledge of standard computer and software applications.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to animal care and control.
  • Knowledge of and skill in demonstrating work and safety procedures.
  • Skill in supervising and coordinating activities of assigned staff.
  • Skill in conducting investigations related to animal care and control.
  • Skill in and experience in handling animals.
  • Skill in recognizing animal needs.
  • Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports.
  • Skill in communicating verbally and in writing using tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations related to animal care and control.
  • Ability to train subordinate staff through verbal explanation and physical demonstration of job functions.
  • Ability to evaluate current programs and recommend program improvements.
  • Willingness to perform or assist in performing animal euthanasia.
  • Possession of a valid Driver License (Operator).
Responsibilities
  • Supervising and coordinating the activities of subordinate staff performing tasks related to animal care and welfare, animal control, facility maintenance and/or customer service functions.
  • Overseeing the day-to-day functions of animal care and animal control which also involves adoptions, lost and found, and education.
  • Performing supervisory and administrative responsibilities.
  • Training and providing technical support to subordinate staff through verbal explanation of departmental policies and procedures and through physical demonstration of proper equipment usage and animal collection and impoundment techniques.
  • Assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of operations and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Organizing, assigning, and coordinating the work activities of subordinate staff.
  • Demonstrating proper safety and work procedures to subordinates.
  • Performing cash audits and monitoring operational requirements.
  • Ensuring that employees adhere to laws, policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Communicating with citizens, City employees, law enforcement agencies and outside agency representatives to exchange information, resolve potential or real problems, relay statistical information, and/or provide general information.
