Requirements
  • At least two years of experience in an academic, research, or special library, or in a public library with a research or special collections component.
  • Knowledge of bibliographic conventions and experience searching online catalogs and research databases.
  • Experience with digital library projects, knowledge of metadata formats and conventions, and aptitude for learning software used to process, organize, and describe digital documents.
  • Experience with antiquarian library or archival collections.
  • Reading knowledge of one foreign language relevant to Marquand, preferably a Romance or Germanic language.
  • Ability to work with bibliographic citations in several languages.
  • Ability to prioritize work, sustain high productivity, and perform accurate detail work at a computer.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness in a fast-paced environment.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including desktop productivity software and scanning, and basic knowledge of computer hardware, printers, and imaging equipment.
  • Library public service experience and a service orientation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Create metadata and process documents for the Digital Library.
  • Create and maintain Digital Library websites.
  • Help maintain the vault stacks and secure reading room.
  • Prepare materials for transfer to ReCAP.
  • Manage patron requests for original photography and publication permissions for Marquand collections.
  • Manage student employees performing higher-level processing and quality-control work supporting Digital Library projects.
  • Liaise with professionals across the Library, especially in Rare Books, Preservation and Conservation, Library IT, and Cataloging.
  • Staff Marquand service desks, including the Rare Book Reading Room desk, six to eight hours per week or as needed.
  • Assist individuals and classes with rare book collections while following preservation and security protocols.
  • Work the stated nonstandard schedule, including possible occasional weekend hours.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Arts or higher degree.
  • College-level academic work in the Humanities and knowledge of a visually oriented discipline such as art history, archaeology, or media studies.
  • Knowledge of rare book cataloging standards, XML, and Alma or similar integrated library software.
  • Working knowledge of book preservation techniques and standards.
