Requirements
  • A Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Biochemical, or Petroleum Engineering from an accredited university is required.
  • At least 10 years of relevant industrial experience in chemical, petroleum, or biochemical process design engineering is required.
  • Professional Engineering registration or CPIP certification is highly preferred.
  • Ability to train others in process safety and site safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of process safety and its incorporation into process design.
  • Familiarity with equipment, instrumentation, and piping specifications and installation details.
  • Ability to create accurate process engineering documents from vendor equipment data and drawings.
  • Ability to estimate task completion accurately.
  • Ability to assist in developing detailed engineering schedules and man-hour budgets for process engineering work on major capital projects.
  • Experience estimating and scheduling professional service hours and assessing the progress and quality of process engineering work.
  • Ability to develop design criteria and scopes of work for major capital projects.
  • Complete understanding of the skills and experience required for process engineering and design functions.
  • Knowledge and application of company engineering design and computer-aided design drafting standards.
  • Knowledge of computer-aided design software such as AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Ability to lead a small team on a major capital project and deliver commitments.
  • Ability to deliver convincing presentations of engineering and construction services to existing and new clients.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic simulation software such as AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, PIPEPHASE, PIPE-FLO, or SiNet.
  • Knowledge of process simulation software such as Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics, PRO/II, DYNSIM, HYSYS, CHEMCAD, WinGEMS, or ProMax.
  • Willingness to travel for pre-bid meetings, client presentations, and project site meetings.
  • Ability to provide interoffice execution leadership and support through virtual-team and cross-divisional relationships.
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods.
Responsibilities
  • Promote safe working practices and apply safety concepts to process design.
  • Review and approve process engineering deliverables.
  • Validate professional service estimates at project initiation and track changes throughout project execution.
  • Produce professional service estimates for project deliverables, studies, estimates, change notices, and proposal efforts.
  • Establish project design criteria, incorporate client requirements, and apply applicable state, local, and federal standards and codes.
  • Establish and communicate permitting requirements to the project team.
  • Support development of process engineering standards, specifications, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Understand project scope and deliverables and initiate project change notices when deviations affect schedule, deliverables, or cost.
  • Plan and organize project-team work for large capital projects and multiple medium or small capital projects.
  • Communicate project plans to the team, project leadership, and client.
  • Control project performance budgets, schedules, commitments, and quality standards using project-control tools.
  • Delegate work to engineers and designers according to their technical skills and experience and follow up to support efficient, high-quality progress.
  • Consult with leaders from other disciplines to ensure interdisciplinary alignment.
  • Produce estimate-level preliminary designs for major capital projects.
  • Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine efficient engineering approaches.
  • Use applicable industry and department standards, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Produce detailed process design calculations and drawings and coordinate efficient use of drafters and designers.
  • Produce designs emphasizing constructability, operability, maintainability, and compliance with client specifications.
  • Check other engineers' calculations, reports, and studies for accuracy and conformance with codes, specifications, design criteria, and engineering practices.
  • Produce equipment and construction specifications.
  • Monitor drawings in progress for conformance to design calculations and specifications.
  • Assist designers with routine layout and detailing problems and provide information needed to complete engineering drawings.
  • Review vendor and other-discipline information requiring process engineering input.
  • Develop bid packages for procurement of equipment, materials, or services on major capital projects.
  • Participate in professional society meetings to develop business contacts and stay current with industry developments.
  • Participate in sales activities, including pre-bid meetings, client presentations, scope-review meetings, and proposal development.
  • Travel for client presentations and project-related tasks as required.
  • Mentor less experienced process engineers.
  • Review resumes, conduct interviews, and complete interview evaluations for process engineering candidates.
  • Identify and develop work-sharing packages for interoffice execution support and lead communication and execution within scope, schedule, and budget.
