Requirements
  • Analytically and numerically excellent, comfort with building models, business cases and valuations
  • Comfortable creating and shaping an idea from a “blank sheet of paper”
  • Happy to operate autonomously in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment with often minimal organisational structure or process
  • Possibly an (ex-) top tier strategy consultant with entrepreneurial streak, or similar background, ideally with some experience in formal paper writing
  • Naturally an 80/20 thinker - drawn to fast, simple solutions with an instinct to cut through the noise, but also able to get stuck into details when it counts
  • Not afraid to ask for help, or to brainstorm with others, but also enjoys a high degree of autonomy and can be defined as a self-starter
  • Excited and interested in deals and negotiation, and commercially creative
  • Truly values-led; passionate about renewables and decarbonisation
  • A can-do attitude, with a bias for action and willingness to 'muck in'

Responsibilities
  • Often strategy teams make lots of Powerpoint presentations, build hypothetical forecasts and business plans, and act as firefighters for organisational and political issues such as internal transformation
  • While there is a bit of the above, we spend much more time on the 'doing': turbo-charging the growth of Octopus Energy across our businesses: Retail, Software Licensing & Transformation, Generation, Services, EVs, Heating and more
  • We help to quickly prioritise opportunities, structure them, and chase after them ourselves or find an owner in the business. In some ways we are the “bleeding edge” in the business - as soon as we begin to repeat an activity, it is handed over to become industrialised by the rest of the team
  • We work on a day to day basis with the Group CEO, Group CFO and global leadership team, given the projects we work on have significant implications for strategy, valuation, balance sheet, financial planning and corporate structuring. It will often be your analysis or recommendation that will form the basis of 'go' or 'no go' decision in a very real way
  • We deeply understand the unit economics, and hard and soft competitive advantages in our business. We use that knowledge to support “selling” to prospective acquisition, partners and companies looking to license our technology
  • We rotate through opportunities so each of us benefits from variety, diverse experiences and broader learning. Often we work independently on our own opportunities, sometimes we tag team with one “lead” and one “support”, and sometimes we work together. The ability to share project work - either stepping in to support a colleague, or handing content over when help is needed - allows us to remain agile. It's flexible, but the principle is that we should all be interested, motivated and inspired when we come to work
