Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Zero to six months of work experience is required.
- The employee must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, analyze situations, determine necessary steps, and follow through to achieve the expected outcome.
- The employee must communicate professionally with internal and external peers, state workers, external partners, patients, and families.
- The employee must understand and interpret credit bureau data.
- The employee must comply with all MUSC Health policies and procedures.
- The employee must meet the stated physical requirements, including standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, reaching, using both hands and legs, performing repetitive hand and arm motions, maintaining corrected 20/40 vision, working indoors in a latex-safe environment, and lifting or carrying specified weights.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate scheduled patient visits to identify and resolve funding or coverage issues, including Medicaid, disability, financial assistance, insurance coverage, and patients' ability to pay out of pocket for University Medical Associates and University Medical Association services.
- Notify patients of copayments, deductibles, and deposits before services are rendered, and collect payments when applicable.
- Provide estimates using the fee estimation tool in Epic and assist with processing financial applications.
- Communicate and educate patients accurately about out-of-pocket costs for hospital and physician services to minimize complaints.
- Identify discrepancies within the Epic tool and work with appropriate teams to resolve them.
- Accept advance payments and hand them off to the appropriate billing office for posting to patient accounts.
- Calculate patient estimates for insured patients based on plan benefits and out-of-pocket thresholds, discuss payment options, and finalize the payment method.
- Document all activities in Epic.
- Obtain and record accurate patient data and comply with state and federal regulations, including informing patients about the Financial Assistance Program and COBRA.
- Work with internal and external peers and communicate professionally.
- Interact with state workers and external partners to accomplish work efforts.
- Process assigned patient accounts and financial-counseling work queues in Epic while meeting departmental metrics.
- Ensure patient accounts are appropriately processed and all relevant areas are documented so the work is visible to the health care team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
