Sandvik has partnered with Rio Tinto to integrate its i-series surface drill rigs with Rio Tinto's Autonomous Drilling System. The collaboration will combine Sandvik's AutoMine automation technology with Rio Tinto's remote operations expertise to improve safety, productivity and system interoperability in open-pit mining. Development will be managed through Rio Tinto's Perth Operations Centre, beginning with testing at Sandvik's facility in Finland. Field trials will follow at Rio Tinto's Western Australian operations to evaluate performance against production targets. The project leverages existing autonomous infrastructure at Rio Tinto's iron ore sites and aligns with both companies' expansion plans, including Sandvik's recent copper mine equipment orders and Rio Tinto's $1.5 billion Quebec smelter expansion, due to complete by end-2026.
Swedish engineering group Sandvik reported strong first-quarter results for 2026, with order intake rising 23% to SEK 36.8 billion and revenues increasing 15% to SEK 30.7 billion, both at fixed exchange rates and organically. Sandvik is investing in a new manufacturing facility in Greater Sudbury, Canada, to increase production capacity and support industrial and construction customers in North America. The expansion marks a long-term commitment to the region. The announcement comes as Sandvik's shares trade at SEK399.4, showing strong recent performance with returns of 15.3% over the past month and 76.7% over one year. However, the stock is trading approximately 20% above analysts' target price of SEK331.8 and 53.1% above estimated fair value. The company's price-to-earnings ratio of 34.1 exceeds the machinery industry average of 24.7, raising valuation concerns. Investors are monitoring whether revenue and earnings from the new facility will justify current valuations.
