Requirements
  • Be a junior- or senior-level student majoring in an engineering program, preferably Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Milling Science, or a related discipline.
  • Have strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced design and construction environment.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and in person.
  • Be able to understand the technical and day-to-day operation of a bioprocessing facility.
  • Have experience with hand tools and power tools and strong mechanical ability.
  • Have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new programs.
  • Be able to work in a team environment.
  • Be able to meet the physical requirements, including occasionally lifting up to 60 pounds, climbing stairs and ladders, working at heights and in confined spaces, walking two or more miles per day, standing for extended periods, and working outdoors.
  • Be able to wear personal protective equipment, including a hard hat, steel-toed boots, safety glasses, ear plugs, and gloves.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Milling and Material Handling Engineering team with the design, implementation, and specification of plant process systems.
  • Assist with grain and DDGS conveying system engineering design and layout.
  • Use AutoCAD and other computer-aided design software to create basic 3D models, multi-view drawings, and drafting for material handling equipment, transitions, and layout drawings.
  • Tear down and rebuild POET Load Toad railcar loading units and perform removal and installation activities at bioprocessing sites.
  • Specify equipment and instrumentation.
  • Support procurement, contract administration, and contractor/vendor communication activities.
  • Coordinate with Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering disciplines to achieve project goals.
  • Complete data analysis of Milling and Material Handling system design.
  • Assist with on-site commissioning and start-up activities for grain conveying, hammer milling, dust collection, pneumatic transfer systems, truck and bulk weigh scales, grain probes, and other material handling equipment.
  • Promote safe behavior and environmental compliance.
  • Travel to bioprocessing facilities for meetings and site visits, with up to 50% travel and occasional overnight travel.
  • Balance office work with time at bioprocessing facilities, including physical labor when helping team members.

World's largest thermal energy storage plant launches in South Dakota

POET has partnered with Antora Energy to launch a 5-gigawatt-hour thermal energy storage facility in Big Stone City, South Dakota, making it among the world's largest energy storage plants. The system stores excess wind energy in carbon blocks heated to 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which can later power POET's adjacent ethanol plant. The facility, Antora's first commercial production site, was built in under a year and supported 300 construction jobs. It aims to increase ethanol production efficiency, expand markets for South Dakota corn growers, and reduce fossil fuel reliance. The project received bipartisan support and was funded primarily through private investment led by Grok Ventures. The project advanced from construction to delivering energy in under 12 months and ranks among the world's largest energy storage projects by capacity. Antora's thermal batteries store electricity as heat in carbon blocks, providing POET with around-the-clock energy under a long-term agreement. The system enables increased bioethanol production and creates tens of millions of dollars annually in new market opportunities for South Dakota farmers. CF Industries and POET launch low-carbon fertiliser pilot to cut ethanol production emissions

CF Industries and POET have launched a pilot project with major agricultural cooperatives to develop a low-carbon fertiliser supply chain. The initiative aims to reduce the carbon intensity of corn and enable production of low-carbon ethanol for motor fuel and export. The pilot includes WinField United, NuWay-K&H, New Cooperative and Farmer's Cooperative. Participants will track low-carbon fertiliser from CF Industries' production through retail distribution to corn growers across Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska. POET will then use the corn to produce an estimated 5-6 million gallons of lower carbon intensity ethanol. CF Industries produces low-carbon ammonia at its Donaldsonville Complex by capturing and permanently storing carbon dioxide emissions underground. At full capacity, the facility can produce up to 1.9 million tonnes annually, meeting fertiliser requirements for 19-22 million acres of planted corn.
