Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology is required.
  • Generalist certification is required for general laboratories; generalist or specialty certification is required for specialty laboratories.
  • Two years of experience as a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist is required.
  • Generalist or specialty certification from a nationally recognized board or agency is required, depending on the laboratory.
  • A Master of Science may substitute for certification in the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory.
  • Employees must meet applicable Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments requirements for their assigned tasks.
  • Employees must understand and comply with all necessary safety procedures, maintain safety training compliance, report safety incidents within 24 hours, and complete required competency testing and laboratory training.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and complex clinical laboratory tests using standard techniques and equipment.
  • Handle patient specimens and use manual and automated equipment to test specimens and perform and report analytical tests.
  • Operate manual or computerized instrumentation.
  • Calibrate and maintain instrumentation according to standard operating procedures.
  • Process patient samples using appropriate identification techniques and written procedures to ensure quality testing material.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of assay problems as directed by senior staff.
  • Communicate laboratory problems and issues to appropriate individuals.
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Participate in developing new medical laboratory tests and techniques.
  • Prepare for laboratory inspections and review inspection documents and procedures.
  • Report non-compliance issues to upper-level staff.
  • Perform proficiency testing to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Document quality control and quality assurance results.
  • Notify upper-level personnel of instrument malfunctions or unusual or unexpected data or results.
  • Review written procedures and policies for accuracy and submit changes to the manager or designee.
  • Attend required laboratory meetings, safety training, and compliance training.
  • Train new staff.
  • Serve as a resource person and role model according to laboratory management guidelines.
  • Provide technical guidance and instruction to students, interns, residents, staff, and other employees.
  • Cooperate and communicate with coworkers to support effective workflow.
