Requirements
  • Graduate of a Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs-approved anesthesia program.
  • Master's degree or higher with a concentration in Nurse Anesthesia for employees hired after March 1, 2019.
  • Current certification or recertification by the National Board on Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Eligibility for medical malpractice insurance through MUSC at the required limits.
  • Current competency in the clinical privileges extended.
  • Proficiency in operating anesthesia equipment and current knowledge of anesthesia practice.
  • Basic knowledge of safety in a health care facility and knowledge and practice of universal precautions in patient contact.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with surgeons, residents, anesthesia personnel, and nursing staff.
  • Recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, or eligibility for recognition, with a current license to practice or eligibility to obtain authorization to practice in South Carolina.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association.
  • Ability to perform the stated physical functions, including standing, sitting, walking, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted, and exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
  • Ability to maintain the required corrected vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, hearing acuity, and tactile sensory functions.
  • Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations, work rotating shifts, and work overtime as required.
  • Ability to work in a latex-safe environment.
  • Ability to qualify physically for respirator use initially and as required for selected positions.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare prescribed solutions and administer anesthetics according to specified methods and procedures.
  • Inform the physician of the patient's condition during anesthesia.
  • Perform pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia patient visits.
  • Document anesthesia notes in patient records.
  • Provide anesthesia care to a wide variety of adult patients.
  • Administer appropriate anesthetics in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist in accordance with standards of practice.
  • Use anesthesia machines and related equipment.
  • Assist with transporting patients.
  • Maintain adequate patient records.
  • Participate in departmental teaching activities.
  • Participate in continuing education programs.
  • Provide resuscitative care as indicated.
