About The Role
Be the driving force behind next-level engineering at Virta! The Foundations group is on a mission to improve engineering velocity while upholding reliability, performance, scalability and compliance of the technology platform. This crucial group provides Virta engineering teams with the tools, processes and automation needed to drive efficient and high-quality product development. The foundations group keeps Virta’s technology humming smoothly and delivering optimal performance to customers.
As Virta grows rapidly in 2024, this role will be key to evolving our foundational technologies as the engineering organization matures. As an engineering leader for this team, you’ll develop and execute the engineering strategy and collaborate with product teams to make that vision a reality. We seek an innovative leader who can balance long-term and short-term views with solid execution, coach team members, refine processes, and promote engineering excellence across the organization.

Responsibilities
Strategy
Develop technical strategy in partnership with engineering leadership to drive robust development operations, scalable and secure cloud infrastructure and core services and capabilities that support overall business objectives
Collaborate with product engineering teams to establish a long-term technical strategy and roadmap for a highly scalable, available and secure platform
Execution
Effectively ensure teams execute against planned goals and objectives that meet strategic initiatives.
Establish robust CI/CD pipelines, SRE practices, and devOps processes to enhance velocity, reliability, efficiency, and security.
Optimize cloud and data infrastructure for scalability, costs, and performance.
Drive innovative processes and systems that improve developer productivity and the overall software development lifecycle.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of software engineering and devOps practices.
Translate engineering problems into solutions; evangelize vision; break into trackable metrics and project plans.
Lead teams to drive stability, uptime, and continuous delivery while raising the bar on engineering best practices.
People
Nurture, build and grow a team of passionate and talented Engineering managers and individual contributors.
Help increase the technical level of the team by engaging in mentorship and best practice development organization-wide.
Lead teams of engineers across technical disciplines to collaborate on developing core infrastructure, tools and systems that empower software development efforts across the organization.
Understand cross-functional business needs, build stakeholder alignment, and make the appropriate tradeoffs without lowering the technical quality bar.
90 Day Plan
Within your first 90 days at Virta, we expect you will do the following:
Partner with engineering leaders, product counterparts and cross-functional stakeholders to align on group mission, metrics, planning, and roadmapping.
Review and adjust rituals, processes & metrics on your teams to drive measurable execution improvements while maintaining a high technical bar and quality.
Work with broader engineering leaders to plan and design systems to support more than 10x growth in the next 2 years.
Establish strong relationships with the leaders of Engineering, Product, Design, Information Security, IT and Legal teams.
Requirements
Experience building, leading and managing teams of engineers responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining foundational technology, such as cloud infrastructure, data platforms, developer tooling, security and/or site reliability.
8+ years of experience building, managing and leading Engineering teams focused on foundational technologies.
Demonstrated success partnering directly with engineering teams across an organization to develop and deploy foundational technology and successfully influence teams to adopt standards, improved processes and best practices.
Deep knowledge of software engineering best practices, design and software architecture.
Experience in building systems and processes for fast paced growth-stage startups.
Great problem solving skills and the ability to plan and drive complex projects with accurate estimations and timely execution.
Excellent communication skills and ability to talk to both technical and non-technical audiences with the ability to address engineers as well as senior leadership. (technical diagrams, specs, presentation)
High emotional intelligence and self-awareness paired with demonstrated excellence in collaboration, relationship-building, and proactive communication.

Virta has a location based compensation structure. Starting pay will be based on a number of factors and commensurate with qualifications & experience.
