Requirements

  • Successful completion of conversation and translation competency testing in a secondary language.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations from various economic backgrounds and age groups.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a dedicated team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced health care environment with varied customer service needs.
  • Accurate and appropriate interpretation skills at all times.
  • A current North Carolina driver's license with a driving record suitable for Duke van operations and corporate risk management.
Responsibilities
  • Perform interpretation, translation, and medical escort services for non-English-speaking patients receiving care within the Duke Health System.
  • Act as a neutral conduit of information between Duke staff and international or domestic patients, visitors, families, and escorts.
  • Accurately communicate information about outpatient services, hospitalization, advance directives, treatment consents, diagnoses, prognoses, treatment plans, follow-up appointments, and health care education.
  • Address and document patient questions and concerns in accordance with Risk Management directives.
  • Provide interpreter services and convey the exact message rather than subjectively summarizing information.
  • Complete required documentation identified by the International Patient Center and maintain accurate daily records of service requests and delivered services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the program.
  • Promote customer satisfaction related to Duke services and notify the supervisor of issues that may affect patients or Duke staff.
  • Participate in continuing education programs and competency training to enhance the professional role of the international medical escort.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to processes, services, and employee work rules.
  • Maintain confidentiality in matters related to patient care and visitor issues involving non-English-speaking patients, families, and escorts.
  • Participate in on-call coverage to provide interpretation and translation services during assigned business and non-business hours.
