Requirements
  • The candidate must be a physician with an MD or equivalent and have 2–5 years of pharmacovigilance or other relevant experience, such as clinical research, Medical Affairs, or clinical experience.
  • The candidate must have at least 1 year of clinical practice experience and demonstrated skills in clinical medicine.
  • The candidate must have knowledge of drug development principles, pharmacology, clinical trial methodology and design, medical monitoring of trials, assessment of drug risks and benefits, and safety assessment of marketed and investigational drugs.
  • The candidate must have knowledge of Good Clinical Practices, pharmacovigilance regulatory requirements in the United States, European Union, and globally, clinical trial conduct, regulatory filings, pharmacovigilance documents, and risk management plans.
  • The candidate must be able to lead global cross-functional teams, collaborate across functions, and build consensus.
  • The candidate must be able to critically evaluate safety data from clinical trials, environmental sources, literature, and other sources; assess clinical importance and strategic impact; and present findings clearly in written and oral communications.
  • The candidate must be able to plan work to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities effectively.
  • The candidate must have fluent written and spoken English.
  • The candidate must be able to influence, negotiate, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
  • The Medical Safety Officer reports to the Portfolio Safety Head and oversees the safety assessment of assigned marketed and investigational drugs within the therapeutic area.
  • The Medical Safety Officer proactively and timely assesses safety data to characterize emerging and known safety profiles and product benefit-risk.
  • The Medical Safety Officer communicates potential and known risks to relevant internal leaders, senior management, health authorities, prescribers, and patients when appropriate.
  • The Medical Safety Officer leads the design and implementation of risk mitigation strategies in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • The Medical Safety Officer strategically leads Safety Management Teams for assigned products, including safety surveillance, signal detection, risk management, Risk Management Plans, Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies, and other activities related to product safety profiles.
  • The Medical Safety Officer provides medical and scientific expertise as the Global Medical Safety representative on Compound Development Teams and Clinical Teams.
  • The Medical Safety Officer participates in the design of clinical protocols to anticipate safety concerns and minimize or mitigate patient impact.
  • The Medical Safety Officer provides safety input to risk management plans, safety development plans, clinical trial protocols, informed consent forms, Investigator’s Brochures and addenda, Clinical Study Reports, Annual Safety Reports, Integrated Safety Summaries, Summary of Clinical Safety documents, regulatory filings, periodic benefit-risk and safety reports, health authority queries, and Core Data Sheets.
  • The Medical Safety Officer communicates important results of medical safety and benefit-risk management evaluations to Global Medical Safety leadership, the Chief Medical Officer, and the Medical Safety Council.
  • The Medical Safety Officer participates in meetings with health authorities and external key opinion leaders.
  • The Medical Safety Officer provides medical safety leadership on due diligence teams evaluating licensing and acquisition opportunities.
  • The Medical Safety Officer provides medical oversight to contractors and non-physician staff preparing written safety evaluations by defining safety questions, developing review and analysis strategies, interpreting results, determining medical importance, and reviewing and approving medical assessment reports.
  • The Medical Safety Officer works across Global Medical Safety therapeutic areas to align and improve common processes for safety data collection, assessment, and safety-related processes and issues.
  • The Medical Safety Officer assists with creating, reviewing, and implementing standard operating procedures, work instructions, guidelines, documents, and tools related to safety assessment and risk management.
  • The Medical Safety Officer leads or actively participates in department-wide initiatives and performs delegated responsibilities for other Medical Safety Officers and Safety Management Team chairs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Board certification, board eligibility, or equivalent is preferred.
  • A medical specialization is preferred.
  • Experience with health authority presentations is preferred.
  • Publication and journal article writing experience is desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint is desired.
