A new class action lawsuit has been filed against Binance in the U.S. Western District Court of Washington, accusing the company and its founder, Changpeng Zhao, of enabling widespread money laundering and violating U.S. financial regulations. The lawsuit, brought by former exchange users Philip Martin, Natalie Tang, and Yatin Khanna and filed Friday, alleges that Binance’s negligent compliance practices allowed bad actors to use the platform to launder stolen crypto, causing significant financial harm to U.S. users.A representative for Binance did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment. The complaint details how Binance, under Zhao’s leadership, allegedly operated as an unlicensed money-transmitting business, willfully ignoring anti-money laundering requirements and facilitating transactions that helped criminals obscure the origins of illicit funds. According to the plaintiffs, Binance’s rapid ascent to becoming the world’s largest crypto exchange was fueled by its deliberate evasion of U.S. regulations, which would have otherwise curbed its access to the lucrative American market. The lawsuit also alleges that Zhao, who founded Binance in 2017, prioritized profits over legal compliance, creating an environment where U.S. users were encouraged to bypass the platform’s minimal compliance checks. The plaintiffs claim that Binance’s failure to implement robust AML and Know Your Customer protocols turned the exchange into a hub for laundering crypto, often stolen through hacks and other illicit activities. The fresh class action comes on the heels of a series of legal actions against Zhao and Binance
Decrypt’s Art, Fashion, and Entertainment Hub. Discover SCENEA federal judge has ordered the copyright infringement case against AI image developers Stability AI, Midjourney, and the online art community DeviantART to move forward, according to court documents released Monday. The lawsuit—brought by attorneys for artists including Sarah Andersen, Kelly McKernan, and Karla Ortiz—alleges the developers used their work without permission to train their respective AI models.According to court documents shared by the Hollywood Reporter, U.S. District Judge William Orrick, who has been overseeing the case, granted the dismissal of the claims of infringement under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA) as well as the claim of “unjust enrichment.”Judge Orrick did, however, allow the claims of copyright and trademark infringement, respectively, to move forward, denying the defendant's motion to dismiss."The court declined to dismiss some of the artists’ claims—that means those claims survive the pleading stage, and the artists live to fight another day,” IP litigator at the law firm of Knobbe Martens, Mark Lezama, told Decrypt. “But the artists didn’t have to address what may be their biggest hurdle: a fair use defense.”ADADFair use refers to a legal principle under U.S. copyright law that allows limited use of copyrighted material without the need to obtain permission from the copyright holder.“The court repeatedly emphasized that it would need to assess fair use on an evidentiary record
Americans for IVF champions accessible fertility care for families who want the gift of children and is supporting passage of the HOPE with Fertility Services Act to protect this treatment.WASHINGTON, June 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- With hundreds of members from diverse backgrounds, Americans for IVF , a new national organization launched today, aims to educate and engage the American public and Members of Congress on the importance of IVF as a morally just pathway to parenthood for families facing infertility challenges. The Coalition is collaborating across party lines in support of the HOPE with Fertility Services Act to depoliticize this issue, advocating for a straightforward, bipartisan solution that protects access to IVF and makes it more affordable for more Americans.Andrea Bozek, AIVF national spokeswoman who has had two children through IVF said, "There is nothing more pro-life than IVF, as it enables parents who cannot otherwise have children to bring new life into the world. Since the Alabama court decision, this issue has been clouded by misinformation from all sides for political purposes. A diagnosis of infertility does not choose liberals, conservatives or independents. It affects people from all walks of life. Americans for IVF believes it is time to set aside political differences and focus on ensuring access to this essential and life-creating treatment."IVF became a significant topic during the election year in February when the Alabama Supreme Court declared that frozen embryos are legally considered people
