Job Description
Basic Purpose
The Cosmetology/Barber Examiner I is responsible for administering practical examinations and proctoring written examinations for cosmetology and barbering licensure candidates to ensure competency and adherence to industry standards. This position evaluates candidates’ technical skills, safety procedures, and knowledge of state regulations as set forth by the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology & Barbering. The examiner plays a vital role in maintaining professional standards and public safety within the cosmetology and barbering industry by ensuring that all licensees meet the required qualifications.
Typical Functions
Administers practical and written examinations for cosmetology and barbering licensure candidates to evaluate technical proficiency, sanitation practices, and adherence to state regulations.
Ensures examination procedures are conducted fairly, consistently, and in accordance with the standards set by the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology & Barbering.
Assesses candidates’ skills in various cosmetology and barbering services, including hair cutting, chemical treatments, nail care, skincare, and sanitation practices.
Maintains accurate records of examination results, candidate performance, and any testing irregularities.
Provides candidates with clear instructions on examination procedures and expectations.
Identifies and reports any violations of examination policies, testing misconduct, or concerns related to candidate competency.
Collaborates with Board staff and other inspectors/examiners to ensure a standardized and effective testing environment.
May occasionally travel to designated locations to conduct demonstrations and participate in training sessions.
Performs other related duties as assigned to support the mission of the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology & Barbering.

Examiners ensure that testing procedures are conducted fairly, consistently, and in accordance with established guidelines. This role may also involve overseeing examinations administered in large group settings, maintaining accurate records of results, and reporting any testing irregularities. Examiners play a crucial role in upholding professional standards within the industry by ensuring that all licensed individuals meet the necessary qualifications to practice safely and competently. Examiners may occasionally travel to public and private cosmetology schools to conduct demonstrations and participate in training sessions.
Education and Experience
At least three (3) years of experience as a licensee in the practice of cosmetology or barbering and current dual licensure of both cosmetology and barbering Master Instructor’s licenses are required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies
This position requires knowledge of state laws, rules, and regulations governing the practice of cosmetology and barbering, as well as standardized examination procedures and evaluation criteria. A strong understanding of test administration, security protocols, and the assessment of cosmetology and barbering skills is essential. The ability to effectively conduct practical examinations, ensure compliance with testing standards, and provide fair and objective evaluations is necessary. Strong analytical skills are required to assess candidates’ technical proficiency and adherence to health and safety regulations. The role also demands the ability to clearly communicate instructions, provide constructive feedback, and interact professionally with candidates from diverse backgrounds. Proficiency in performing cosmetology and barbering tasks, maintaining accurate records, and collaborating with colleagues to uphold examination integrity is crucial for success in this position.
Special Requirements
A current dual licensure of both cosmetology and barbering Master Instructor’s licenses are required.
