Course Description:
Exploration of ethical considerations and practical strategies for engaging patients and community partners in interdisciplinary health science research. Examination of principles for respectful and inclusive collaboration that values diverse perspectives in the research process. Key topics include informed consent, power dynamics, cultural competency, and equitable partnerships. Focus on navigating ethical challenges, fostering meaningful relationships, and co-creating research projects that address community needs and priorities. Emphasis on transparency and accountability, equipping participants with the skills to uphold ethical standards while promoting social justice and advancing the collective well-being of all stakeholders in health research.

- Be currently enrolled in a PhD program in Health Sciences, Public Health, Population Health, Epidemiology, Health Policy, or a related relevant field, or be a postdoctoral fellow holding a PhD in a relevant field, or possess equivalent professional expertise in patient engagement, community-based research, health equity or public health.
- Demonstrate substantial and recent experience, within the past five years, developing, implementing, or sustaining partnerships with persons with lived experience, patients, caregivers, community organizations, Indigenous communities, health-system partners, or other relevant community partners in health research.
- Provide concrete evidence of the scope and depth of this experience, such as:
* the number and types of research partnerships, projects, advisory groups, or community initiatives in which the applicant has held a meaningful role;
* the duration and continuity of these partnerships;
* the stages of the research process in which partners were engaged, such as priority setting, study design, governance, recruitment, data interpretation, knowledge mobilization, or evaluation;
* the nature of the applicant’s role and level of responsibility;
* the number or diversity of persons, communities, or organizations engaged; and
* documented outputs or outcomes arising from these partnerships.
- Have university-level teaching or teaching assistant experience.
- Have demonstrated expertise in ethical, respectful, inclusive, and equitable approaches to engaging persons with lived experience and community partners throughout the research process.
- Have experience addressing informed consent, power dynamics, cultural humility, accessibility, representation, compensation, reciprocity, transparency, accountability, or related ethical considerations in collaborative health research.
- Have experience applying co-design, co-creation, participatory, patient-oriented, community-based, or other collaborative approaches to research that responds to community-identified needs and priorities.

This course and requires a minimum of 75% in-person instruction.
