Requirements
  • A Registered Nurse license in Virginia or a compact member state is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • The ability to prioritize is required.
  • Good communication and strong organizational skills are required.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing care to patients in the recovery room in accordance with Planned Parenthood South Atlantic policies and procedures and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Assist and monitor patients in the recovery room by taking vital signs, administering medication, providing verbal and written aftercare instructions and birth control information, and reporting signs or symptoms of post-abortion complications to the provider on duty.
  • Provide customer service, elicit client needs, and educate clients about Planned Parenthood South Atlantic services and community resources.
  • Educate patients in a non-judgmental manner and provide support and information on reproductive and sexual health issues, including birth control methods, pregnancy options including abortion, sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and safer sex.
  • Stock the recovery room with necessary supplies, including snacks, drinks, pads, brochures, and consent and patient education sheets.
  • Prepare and administer medications according to provider orders and maintain complete and accurate controlled-substance administration logs.
  • Ensure patient charts and logs are completed and maintained accurately and promptly, including required staff signatures and initials.
  • Participate in routine audits and other quality assurance and management procedures as assigned.
  • Participate in health center staff meetings and emergency drills.
  • Assist providers and patients during abortion and medical procedures by administering medications according to provider orders, monitoring patient vital signs, and completing required documentation according to protocol.
  • Monitor emergency cart inventory and equipment logs monthly for expired medications and supplies, and report concerns to the Health Center Manager or Nurse Director.
  • Remain informed about family planning methods, abortion options, services offered by Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, and applicable protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Take patient emergency calls from the answering service, contact patients, and document interactions in the electronic health record.
  • Consult with Planned Parenthood South Atlantic clinicians and the Chief Medical Officer for guidance on providing medical advice to patients as needed.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and help patients feel comfortable over the phone.
  • Triage daytime patient emergency calls to ensure timely response and document interactions in the electronic health record.
  • Provide North Carolina state-mandated informed consent in person to patients seeking abortion in accordance with state law.
  • Ensure consent documentation is complete, accurate, and signed by all required parties.
  • Assist with scheduling abortion appointments for patients receiving 72-hour consent as needed.
