Requirements
  • A university degree in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in occupational health and safety within a unionized acute health care environment is required.
  • Proven knowledge of health and safety legislation, standards, and guidelines is required.
  • Experience developing and implementing occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and programs is required.
  • Experience coordinating the activities of a health and safety committee is required.
  • Experience developing and delivering training on health and safety topics is required.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills are required to identify, research, and make recommendations related to health and safety hazards and risks.
  • Advanced proficiency in collecting, presenting, and analyzing incident data and trends is required.
  • Ability to interpret and implement legislation and report recommendations related to health and safety is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required for drafting reports and explaining health and safety concepts.
  • Advanced proficiency with Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is required.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job is required.
Responsibilities
  • Support the development and implementation of a Health and Safety Program compliant with health and safety legislation and standards.
  • Provide advice and recommendations to Management team members regarding occupational health and safety matters in an acute care environment.
  • Maintain and support all Safety Programs.
  • Coordinate activities related to hazard and risk assessment.
  • Develop control measures.
  • Develop and deliver educational materials.
  • Review policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Joint Health and Safety Committee activities and ongoing projects.
  • Arrange third-party consultations, review consultation reports, and implement related recommendations.
  • Deliver orientation for new hires.
  • Investigate workplace injuries and incidents.
  • Provide recommendations to managers to improve safety and reduce the organization’s Workplace Safety and Insurance Board costs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation, or progress toward the designation, is an asset.
  • Experience performing inspections, industrial hygiene and ergonomic assessments, and physical demands analysis is an asset.
  • Well-developed client service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments concurrently.
  • Attendance record and time management skills.
