Requirements
  • A Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) certification and 18 months of dialysis experience are required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must meet Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Must complete the Ishihara color blindness test as a condition of employment; failure does not preclude employment, and reasonable accommodations may be considered.
  • Must be able to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and occasional movement of machines and equipment up to 200 pounds and chemical and water solutions up to 30 pounds.
  • Must comply with applicable company policies, procedures, and local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care under the direct supervision of the hemodialysis registered nurse for assigned patients in the acute dialysis setting.
  • Report and document new or unusual incidents, information, complaints, and problems to the registered nurse.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment and participate in quality enhancement, quality assessment, performance improvement, patient satisfaction, and process improvement activities.
  • Set up and prime equipment for hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement, and peritoneal dialysis therapies when documented competency and proficiency have been established and as directed by the nurse.
  • Set up and test the dialysis machine and verify that it is safe for treatment according to manufacturer instructions and company policies and procedures.
  • Welcome assigned patients, inquire about their well-being since their last treatment, and report complaints or observations to the registered nurse.
  • Obtain pre-treatment, post-treatment, and pre-reinfusion vital signs and weights, and report unusual findings to the registered nurse.
  • Report cannulation difficulties as permitted by state requirements and report unusual findings to the registered nurse.
  • Accurately document patient treatment information in the individual patient record, hospital Electronic Medical System, and Acute Care Electronic System.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, sodium modeling, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled, including narrow venous limits.
  • Collect and label specimens and ensure timely delivery to the laboratory according to facility policy.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide prescribed interventions or interventions directed by the registered nurse, monitor patient response to dialysis therapy, and report unusual findings.
  • Perform functions necessary for treatment discontinuation and document the treatment.
  • Evaluate patients before termination of venous access, obtain standing and sitting blood pressures, achieve hemostasis, apply appropriate dressings, evaluate patients before discharge, and report unusual findings.
  • Assist with projects assigned by the direct supervisor or supervising registered nurse.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various locations within the community.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

  • At least six months of experience in a related field, such as emergency medical services, surgical technology, military service, phlebotomy, or technician work, is preferred.
