Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission-recognized or approved Police Academy Training program is required.
  • Successful completion of a Police Field Training program is required.
  • Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission is required.
  • A non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license valid in the State of Maryland is required.
  • Knowledge of citizens' rights and responsibilities, and federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, is required.
  • Skill in detecting situations that imperil public safety; operating emergency vehicles under all conditions; and caring for and using firearms, self-defense tools, and criminal detection devices is required.
  • The ability to communicate orally and in writing, operate two-way radios and telephones, make prompt decisions in routine and critical situations, interact sensitively with a diverse population, maintain composure in stressful and dangerous situations, perform extensive physical activities, carry heavy objects, establish working relationships, follow directions, provide guidance and training, respond to emergencies requiring physical stamina and force, use personal protective equipment, and conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations is required.
  • Employees must maintain certification as specified by the Maryland Police Training Commission.
  • Candidates may be subject to medical inquiries or examinations, pre-employment and random drug testing.
Responsibilities
  • Patrol designated areas by vehicle and on foot to identify and report safety hazards, detect violations of laws and ordinances, and identify wanted vehicles, persons, and unusual conditions while maintaining a visible presence to deter crime.
  • Respond to emergency service calls, evaluate situations, determine appropriate courses of action, perform crowd control, respond to emergencies, and administer emergency medical aid.
  • Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations by interviewing individuals, obtaining statements, and collecting, preserving, and processing evidence.
  • Conduct surveillance; serve warrants and summonses; search and detain suspicious vehicles and persons; and arrest, search, restrain, transport, guard, and process violators.
  • Interact with the campus community and establish rapport with the public.
  • Mediate disputes and provide advice on legal rights and processes, including crisis mediation involving domestic and civil disputes, suicide, or hostage situations.
  • Operate communication equipment to obtain, report, and verify information, and prepare detailed reports and forms to support investigations.
  • Prepare cases and appear and testify in court.
  • Enforce laws, ordinances, and institutional regulations.
  • Direct traffic, investigate accidents, determine causes, and take appropriate action.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned equipment, including firearms and clothing, and operate law-enforcement equipment such as firearms, self-defense tools, and criminal detection devices.
  • Assist in training and direct the activities of law-enforcement and other support personnel.
  • Participate in specialized unit activities such as crime prevention, recertification instruction, criminal investigations, and special events.
  • Work 40 hours per week on a rotating shift, seven days a week.
