Johns Hopkins study: 85% of first graders maintain reading proficiency through second grade after early intervention

Ignite Reading, an early literacy intervention programme, has raised attention with a Johns Hopkins University study showing that 85% of first graders who achieved reading proficiency maintained grade-level skills through second grade without further support. The two-year study across thirteen Massachusetts school districts found that students using the Science of Reading-based programme increased from 6% reading proficiency at the beginning of first grade to 48% by year-end. Students achieved five additional months of learning compared to peers. However, only 12% of students who failed to reach proficiency by the end of first grade caught up later without intervention, highlighting the critical importance of the first-grade window. The programme has delivered over 62 million minutes of personalised instruction to more than 50,000 students nationwide.
