Requirements
  • 10+ years of life underwriting and brokerage experience, including five or more years of large-case review experience involving more than $10 million.
  • Significant experience with both financial and medical underwriting of life applications.
  • In-depth knowledge of underwriting manuals, materials, rules, regulations, procedures, medical factors, and practices affecting mortality and morbidity underwriting.
  • Solid understanding of underwriting administrative systems.
  • Strong financial acumen and advanced risk-assessment skills.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, disease processes, mortality and morbidity risk assessment, risk classification, risk selection, brokerage, older-age underwriting, life-underwriting policies and procedures, alternative rating methods and plans, pricing theory, regulatory issues, life-insurance market conditions, company operations, and life-insurance lines of business.
  • Ability to analyze sophisticated insurance risks, including policy language, alternative rating plans, methodologies, and reinsurance, to assess acceptability.
  • Ability to make decisions on highly complex issues and work with minimal direction.
  • Ability to negotiate and partner with reinsurers and outside sales agencies or firms.
  • Ability to coach, train, and mentor underwriting personnel with diverse levels of expertise.
  • Ability to work with the brokerage distribution system and highly technical teams.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and challenges using creative problem-solving and sound judgment.
  • Ability to work flexibly with ambiguity and adapt to change.
  • Strong written communication, presentation, teamwork, negotiation, and resilience skills.
Responsibilities
  • Underwrite complex life-insurance applications autonomously and within the approved maximum handling limit.
  • Protect the confidentiality of documentation and information acquired throughout the underwriting process.
  • Evaluate applications requiring additional evidence of insurability and authorize underwriting requirements, including medical examinations, blood profiles, home-office specimens, attending-physician reports, inspection reports, client-direct interviews, and other essential information.
  • Apply accelerated and intelligent underwriting strategies and risk-based decision-making to determine appropriate requirements and risk classes, including fluid-less underwriting and alternative sources of medical information.
  • Consult with underwriters, accept referred cases when designated, suggest innovative solutions, motivate team performance, and facilitate communication.
  • Supervise the handling of unusual or complicated cases.
  • Evaluate, appraise, and quantify personal or business financial information and establish insurable interest under the principle of indemnification.
  • Handle complex financial-underwriting applications and assist others through referrals and training.
  • Reach terms for, coordinate, and negotiate automatic and facultative reinsurance within applicable treaties, contractual terms, and market practices.
  • Work on special projects, including developing project plans, requirements, and timelines with little to no direction.
  • Meet and present with field partners and gather feedback about partner needs and expectations.
  • Determine eligibility for temporary insurance and authorize policy-refund disbursements when Temporary Insurance Agreements are not eligible.
  • Authorize reimbursement for medical records and other fees associated with evidence-of-insurability requirements.
  • Interpret electrocardiogram tracings received for life-insurance applications and consult the Medical Director when physician input is required.
  • Support goals and objectives for territories, special-agent programs, and contests.
  • Resolve challenges while improving service time, application-submission quality, underwriting quality, and wastage.
  • Make underwriting decisions up to $20 million for life insurance, up to $1.5 million for morbidity underwriting, and sign off on exceptions for Intelligent Underwriting.
  • Represent Nationwide at industry events and contribute to underwriting best practices.
Desired Qualifications
  • Undergraduate studies in a medical-related discipline, marketing, insurance, risk management, economics, finance, or business management.
  • LOMA Level 1 Certificate, including LOMA 280 and LOMA 290.
  • Chartered Life Underwriter designation.
  • Fellow of the Life Management Institute designation.
  • Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting designation, including applicable AALU requirements, ALU 301, and three fellowship electives.
  • Advanced sales concept training.
  • EKG certification.
